Guests at the Weekapaug Inn in Westerly, Rhode Island, can now take over the elegant but understated 33-room coastal resort for a weekend.
The Relais & Chateaux property recently announced a $125,000 “Milestone Getaway” promotion, which includes a two-night stay for 66 guests, all meals, and on-site activities.
The Milestone Getaway commemorates the 125th anniversary of the historic property, which first opened in 1899. But it’s a perfect time to simultaneously celebrate any personal milestone with family and friends at this bespoke venue—whether it's a special birthday, anniversary, engagement, wedding, or family reunion.
Although lesser known, this boutique hotel is a sister property of the five-star Ocean House on Watch Hill (also in Westerly).
Located at the edge of a secluded beachside community, the Weekapaug Inn overlooks Quonochontaug Pond, separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a barrier beach.
With the ambiance of a summer home rather than a hotel, the original three-story Weekapaug Inn only accommodated 30-40 guests when it opened its doors more than 125 years ago. Moreover, it was built at a time when there were no locks on guest room doors, no televisions, no air-conditioning, and liquor couldn’t be served on the premises.
Over the years, the beloved property weathered tragedy and destruction. It survived a polio outbreak in 1922, the New England Hurricane of 1938, a partial building collapse, and near demolition, ultimately leading to a massive relocation and reconstruction effort that began in 1939.
It may have survived because the hotel was always considered an integral part of the surrounding community, buoyed by their support and revered by generations of past guests.
But by the early 2000s, even the then-modernized hotel desperately needed a total facelift. Two local couples, current owners Langdon B. Wheeler and Kathy Metcalf, and Charles and Deborah Royce, stepped forward to oversee a remarkable $20 million renovation.
Working closely with the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission, they painstakingly preserved the property's authenticity, salvaging and restoring architectural elements and replicating the detail and colors of its original facade.
The reimagined Weekapaug Inn has thoroughly embraced modern technology and placed an emphasis on sustainability, but it still retains the enduring charms of yesteryear.
The intimate property is right-sized with 33 tastefully furnished guest rooms and suites with pond and ocean views, each room unique in layout and decor but all with a cozy, homelike feel.
Public spaces are also welcoming and casual, including a centrally located Garden Room with a fireplace, a TV room for younger guests to enjoy games and crafts, a
