We are never quite ourselves at the airport—perhaps that’s why airport food similarly tends to taste like a lesser version of the real thing. Fortunately, not every airport is a vacuum of flavor and diversity; in fact, a select few have consistently received accolades for their dining experience.
The World Airport Awards, known within the industry as the “Oscars of Aviation” recently released its 2024 ranking of the best airports for dining, considering the overall food selection, variety, and quality of the airport’s restaurants (including cafés, bars, restaurants, and fast food), including their value for money. The winners were selected based on the results of global airport customer satisfaction surveys administered by the UK-based consulting firm Skytrax.
Happily, the majority of the airports that made the ranking are supported by Traveler editors, via a roundup of their most memorable airport meals from around the world, which includes a lokum burger in Istanbul; xiao long bao in Singapore; ramen in Seoul; paninis and gelato in Rome; fried chicken and omakase in Atlanta; and vegetable gyoza in Tokyo Haneda.
So, the next time you find yourselves at one of the airports below, pull up a chair and dig in.

When it comes to our travels, we are meticulous planners: earnestly optimizing our airline miles, comparing dozens of hotels, and snapping up the hottest dinner reservations weeks in advance. So why is it that, when it comes to feeding ourselves at the airport, we are rendered helpless—wandering aimlessly, queuing endlessly, and swiping credit cards left and right? We’ve all been there, face-to-face with a tasteless turkey club (that we didn’t actually want), washed down with a heavily upcharged glass of Pinot.

A big airport can sometimes feel like a teeming metropolis—or an “aerotropolis” as it were, a term coined to describe these rising mega-airport-cum-commerce centers. In fact, the largest U.S. airfields, in terms of area covered, are literally as big as a decent-sized city. And, just like any major city, they also seem to be in a constant state of demolition and reconstruction, with sprawling new terminals being erected to accommodate an ever-growing population of travelers. Last year, U.S. airports handled more than 1 billion passengers flying on U.S. and international carriers, according to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics, and the number is expected to only continue to rise in the coming years.
