I'm an American sending my kids to camp in Italy. It's cheaper and kids eat freshly cooked meals.

I'm an American living in Italy. I've lived here for almost 10 years and have two children, a 5-year-old daughter and a 9-month-old soon. Last year sent my daughter to summer camp for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised.

Choice Privileges award nights no longer top out at 35,000 points per night

Earlier this month, Choice Privileges hiked the award cost of Preferred Hotels & Resorts stays to up to 87,000 points per night. At the time, I celebrated that award nights at Choice Hotels properties still cost between 6,000 and 35,000 points in most parts of the world (except the Asia-Pacific region, where award nights cost up to 75,000 points).

Can Group Hiking Lead to a Longer, Better Life?

The hiking group was as varied as a bag of trail mix, ranging from an elderly man in his seventies to a woman in her early thirties. We had met at the shared breakfast table at Palazzo Fiuggi that morning over coffee and omelets with cured salmon before driving to the hills outside the town for a three-hour hike. When we arrived at the forest, we trailed our guides through the trees, past grazing horses and pale yellow wild orchids. We were encouraged to move at our own speed–if anyone got lost, they could radio the group via the walkie talkies that we all carried. As a fast paced New Yorker, I was certain I’d be charging ahead and leading the pack—but I found myself moving at the same pace as the other hikers, enjoying the friendly chatter.

Europe's Busiest Airport Just Set a New Record — and It's Expecting Even More Passengers

Visitors to the largest airport in the United Kingdom should be prepared for packed crowds. London's Heathrow recently broke a 12-month record with over 81 million passengers flying through the airport. Heathrow also had its busiest May ever, with 7.2 million passengers. It's the first time May numbers have ever surpassed seven million. “Supporting 81 [million] journeys doesn’t just help families to make wonderful holiday memories, importantly it is about the vital trade and business links a hub like Heathrow creates for the UK’s economy,” Heathrow’s CEO Thomas Woldbye said in a release.  Heading into the summer travel season, London has been top of the charts for international bookings. For example, Chase Travel shared their most booked destinations internationally, and London took the top spot, followed by Paris, Tokyo, Rome, and Cancun. The airport expects to break more records this summer, estimating it will see roughly 30 million pass through.

Five New Hotels and Spas Built for Bathing

In the ever-expanding wellness world, one of the latest trends is actually one of the oldest: soaking in, and sometimes drinking, therapeutic waters. In ancient Greece, physicians, including Hippocrates, prescribed mineral-rich baths to treat everything from skin diseases to insomnia. (According to one theory, the word “spa” is an acronym of the Latin phrase “sanus per aqua,” meaning “health by water.”) The practice has also been employed in Asia since at least the sixth century A.D., when nomadic Buddhists are said to have brought the concept of onsen (inns and bathhouses built around natural geothermal pools) to Japan from the Korean Peninsula. Now, with various forms of hydrotherapy, such as cold plunges and steam saunas, making a comeback, wellness entrepreneurs are debuting properties centered on bathing. Here, five places to take a dip.

A Mediterranean-Inspired Getaway in an Australian Surf Town

The origins of Il Delfino, a new oceanside inn in the surf town of Yamba on Australia’s east coast, go back to its founder’s childhood. “I grew up in this area, fascinated by this ramshackle surf cottage,” says the Australian fashion stylist Sheree Commerford. “Having it was a secret dream for as long as I can remember.” At the end of 2021, Commerford bought the building, which had previously been a rustic family lodge, and spent the last two years transforming it into a four-room inn and bungalow that she opened last month. “We wanted to keep all its original midcentury features but add inspiration from some of my favorite travels in the Mediterranean,” she says. That means whitewashed walls, citrus trees in terra-cotta pots and a terrace with Italian-made sun beds and uninterrupted ocean views. The guest rooms, which are named for Italian destinations like Ravello and Ischia, are all equipped with kitchens and each feature a colorful mural by the Australian artist Heidi Middleton. There’s no restaurant at the hotel, but staff will organize breakfast boxes upon request and recommend places to eat in Yamba. They can also help arrange whale-watching excursions, in-house massages and surf lessons.
