This year one of the world’s most famous hotels is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Located in Zurich, Switzerland The Dolder Grand is acclaimed for its opulence, stunning design and gastronomic experiences. Perched high above the city on the Adlisberg, the property lays claim to some of the most breathtaking views of the city, Lake Zurich and the Swiss Alps. As it celebrates its 125th anniversary, the beloved hotel takes a look back at its past, present and future accomplishments.
From spa house to City Resort
When the Dolder Grand first opened on 10 May 1899, it started as a health spa for city residents to relax in a luxurious setting. The hotel started with a billiard room, two elevators, and the first modern communication technologies at the time: the telephone and telegraph. Now, 125 years later, the distinctive Swiss wooden structure stands as an iconic landmark in Zurich.
Today, the original hotel is now joined by two new buildings that lend a stylish, timeless appearance to the traditional property. These additions were meticulously designed by architect Lord Norman Foster during renovations from 2004 to 2008. Along with this expansion, the historic main building was also renovated and restored to its original splendor. This careful and thoughtful restoration carefully blends the hotel’s rich heritage with visionary architecture and art.
New technologies for world-class hospitality
The hotel has managed to maintain its traditional roots yet fully embraces technological advances that will help it deliver better service to its clients. Robots are being used in housekeeping and food and beverage, to do things like assist the bar team with in-room dining orders. “This means more time for employees to pay even more attention to taking care of guests, so they can offer them a perfect stay,” says Markus Granelli, General Manager of the Dolder Grand. This embracing of technology also includes being the first hotel in Switzerland to accept cryptocurrency as a payment option.
Gastronomic hotspot and wellness oasis
One of Europe’s top gastronomic destinations, the Dolder Grand has five restaurants, including Zurich’s most highly awarded restaurant, The Restaurant, with two Michelin stars, headed by world-class chef Heiko Nieder. It was named Hotel of the Year by GaultMillau in 2016 and 2024 in recognition of the creative spirit of Dolder’s culinary tradition.
The spa at the Dolder Grand has an excellent reputation with locals and guests alike. The 4,000-square-metre oasis of wellbeing offers everything from medical treatments to relaxation, beauty treatments, fitness equipment and more. The nearby golf and tennis courts, as well as the recreational options from Dolder Sports (with a swimming

Falling as it does in mid-June, Father’s Day coincides with an upswing in outdoor excursions. Whether your dad is into backpacking, fishing or forest bathing, he could probably use a few upgrades for his campfire cooking. Replace his worn-out plastic cooler with one from Oyster, a Norwegian company that launched its gleaming aluminum, vacuum-insulated version last year. The Japanese gear maker Snow Peak has a titanium cup and pot set with thoughtful details: The two items nestle together to save space in a backpack, and the pot’s lid has a silicone tab that won’t get hot, eliminating the need for an oven mitt. (Every ounce counts when you’re carrying your kitchen up a mountain.) To ease his mind around meal planning, gift him a few vegan camp meals from Poe & Co. Folk Foods, founded last year by the California-based chef couple Jamie and Jayson Poe. (She cooked at New York’s Gramercy Tavern, he at the Four Seasons in Santa Barbara.) Their offerings include a black garlic ramen bowl and coconut chickpea stew — all you have to do is pour in a bit of boiling water.

Nature has its way of derailing travel plans. A landslide in August 2023 in the French Alps blocked the main railway just west of the Mont Cenis tunnel. This route is used by all trains from Italy to Lyon and Paris. The sleek French TGVs and the even sleeker Italian Frecciarossa trains competing on the lucrative link from Milan to the French capital were stopped in their tracks. Many passengers bound for Paris and London from Italy rerouted through Switzerland, while others devised creative itineraries via the Riviera, using the historic railway running west from Genoa which, in 1872, became one of the first two routes crossing the frontier from Italy into France. The Mont Cenis route still hasn’t reopened so, needing to travel from Trieste to France, I opt for a dose of Ligurian sunshine and take the train via Genoa, following the coast west from there into France.
