The Eiffel Tower closed to visitors on Tuesday amid a worker’s strike with officials warning the closure could be extended.
A warning, which was posted to the homepage for the famous Parisian attraction, advised potential visitors to check the website before coming. The closure marked the third time in two months — and the second consecutive day — the Eiffel Tower was shuttered, the Associated Press reported.
Officials added the closure could be extended to Wednesday.
“Due to a strike action of a part of the Eiffel Tower personnel, the Eiffel Tower is currently closed,” the website read on Monday. “Visitors with e-tickets for today are invited to check their email. We apologize for the inconvenience. Due to a renewable strike notice, the opening of the Eiffel Tower could be disrupted on February 21. Check the website before traveling.”
The famous attraction, which was designed as the centerpiece of the 1889 World's Fair, is typically open every day, receives an average of 6 million visitors a year — about 75 percent of which come from overseas, according to tower officials.
Beyond Tuesday’s closure, the tower was also closed to visitors on Monday as well as for a day over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays due to a strike over contract negotiations, the AP noted.
While travelers can’t climb to the top of the Eiffel Tower right now, the landmark dominates the Parisian skyline and can be seen from nearly anywhere in the city. Travelers can admire it from the viewpoint of Parc de Belleville, from a boat on a canal cruise, or from the Jardins du Trocadero, which sits just across the Seine from the tower.
The strike at the Eiffel Tower comes just months before Paris is set to host the Olympics starting on July 26. The anticipation of the games has sent hotel prices soaring and travelers clamoring for tickets.
