April might only have 30 days, but this year, those days were filled with some pretty exciting hotel news — especially for Hilton and Hyatt loyalists.
On the Hilton front, the company announced it purchased a majority stake in the parent company of NoMad Hotels and plans to grow the luxury lifestyle brand to more than 100 hotels worldwide. Over at Hyatt, the long-awaited integration of Mr and Mrs Smith added more than 700 hotels to World of Hyatt.
Then there was news that the U.S. hospitality job force is back to pre-pandemic levels — though that doesn't mean housekeeping is fully back to normal.
Now it's time to share a few smaller pieces of hotel news you might want to know about as we head into May. Personally, I am heading off for the first bit of the month to become a married man and enjoy a honeymoon in Paris. (Au revoir, for now.)
Here's all the hotel news you might have missed in April.
The St. Regis Punta Mita in Mexico is not only one of the best St. Regis properties in the world — it's one that will "restore your faith in the service sector," our most recent review explains.
That's about to get even better, as the Marriott Bonvoy property just announced a $45 million transformation that will include redesigned rooms and suites; refreshed common areas like the lobby, pools and spa; a new beachfront bar and other restaurants; and all-new wellness offerings.
So even if you already love this iconic St. Regis and its famed butler service, you're sure to have a totally fresh experience next time you visit.
For my fellow reality TV junkies who go out of their way to eat at celebrity-owned restaurants or make pilgrimages to places where "Real Housewives" have had iconic fights, it's time to set your sights on Lake Tahoe. Lisa Vanderpump has just opened a new restaurant at Harvey's Lake Tahoe (part of Caesars).
Called Wolf by Vanderpump, the restaurant and bar is a rustic take on all things LVP (think: glitzy chandeliers and stone columns) that serves a menu of cocktails crafted by Lisa's daughter, Pandora Vanderpump Sabo. If any of the drinks are half as good as the everything bagel martini at Vanderpump a Paris in Las Vegas, it's sure to be incredible.
The first and only time I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria New York was after spending the previous few nights at a hostel in Brooklyn. I was in New York City, deciding if I wanted to follow my dream of being a travel journalist. My best friend surprised me with a night at one of the city's most iconic hotels (despite how truly broke we were, having just finished college) to get a "taste" of what life could be like if I chased my dream.
Luckily for me, it all worked out.
Now, nearly 10 years after that stay and a few years after closing for an

Richard Branson has added a new safari experience to his Virgin Limited Edition portfolio—the award-winning Finch Hattons Luxury Safari Camp in Kenya. Located in Africa's only Shetani lava flow, Finch Hattons features 17 tented suites and offers stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The camp joins other African destinations in Virgin Limited Edition's collection, including Mahali Mzuri (also in Kenya), South Africa’s Ulusaba Private Game Reserve and Mont Rochelle hotel and vineyard, and Kasbah Tamadot in Morocco.
Memorial Day is a chance to honor U.S. military personnel and to celebrate the distinct history and landscapes that make this country so unique. The three-day weekend has become the unofficial kick-off to summer and one of the year's busiest travel weekends. More than 42 million Americans traveled over the weekend last year, and airlines and experts expect a similar number this year.
A trio of tiny Indonesian islands, Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air all share similar traits. They are each fringed by dreamy white sand beaches, are mercifully free of motorized transport and have excellent diving and snorkeling. Still, each has developed at a very different pace and has a distinctly different atmosphere.
Many travelers post photos and reels from their vacations, showing off the scenery from their beach getaways or their retreats into the mountains, giving tours of their hotel suites and hovering their iPhones over plates of local cuisine. But there may be a growing segment of travelers who are keeping quiet about their travels, at least in real time—and it has nothing to do with being humble or worrying about being burglarized while away from home. Rather, they don’t want their bosses to know they’re away because they never submitted a PTO request, a move that’s known as a “hush-cation” or a “hush trip.”
For Allergy and Asthma Awareness Month, Lawn Love ranked the worst and best cities for grass allergies this summer.
A millennium ago, the folklore goes, Castel di Luco was the site of ritual pagan sacrifices. Now the round castle atop a travertine knoll in the untouristed Italian region of Le Marche is the site of a much happier history that’s still being rewritten. And a major new chapter is beginning this spring.
Sometimes, there's nothing better than being a tourist for the day in your own state. As a Florida resident, I'm always looking for new places to visit without traveling far from home.
Peter Hoagland always checks to see if his travel insurance is refundable. That's because anything can happen between the time you book your vacation and when you leave — and because travel insurance isn't always refundable.
Ever dreamed of spending a night in Paris’ Musée D’Orsay? Or parking yourself among the race cars in the Ferrari Museum in Maranello, Italy? Or how about drifting off to sleep among clouds in the house from Up? Those are just a few of the fantastical locations recently revealed in Airbnb’s Icons collection for summer 2024. Airbnb says it will offer more dreamy locations on a regular basis—mostly for free—and more than 4,000 “golden tickets” will be awarded to guests this year.
Art in hotels, both to admire and to purchase, has become a strong focus in recent years. The Fife Arms in the Scottish Highlands has an impressive art collection including a giant Louise Bourgeois spider in the courtyard, 45 Park Lane in London has regularly changing exhibitions and art tours, Claridges has its own gallery with regularly changing shows, while La Residencia in Mallorca, Spain has 33 original pieces on display by Joan Miró. The luxurious Hotel Savoy, in Florence, is another hotel that takes art seriously by creating suites for artists to stay in and through hosting regular exhibitions in its public spaces.
ARoman holiday is glamorous enough—but wouldn’t taking a spin in a luxury supercar make the Eternal City even more memorable? At Palazzo Manfredi, a luxury hotel located in a 17th century home that’s steps from the Colosseum, guests can book the Lamborghini Experience and tool around Rome in a Huracán EVO. Think of it as the coolest way to make your time go faster.
