Travelers flying out of the Washington D.C. area can now complete their Global Entry interviews upon departure, the first airport in the country to offer the option.
Washington Dulles International Airport has become the first airport to offer the option of “Enrollment on Departure” for conditionally-approved Global Entry applicants, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Previously, applicants either had to schedule an interview in advance or complete the step using the Enrollment on Arrival option when they landed in an international terminal.
“Conditionally approved applicants to CBP’s trusted traveler programs can now complete their interviews before boarding a flight leaving the United States,” Marc E. Calixte, the area port director for CBP’s area port of Washington, D.C., said in a statement. “This is great news for those trying to schedule interviews to complete their membership into this critically acclaimed trusted traveler program.”
The new Enrollment on Departure program will be located inside the B concourse by gate B41 and will be open daily from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. To complete the interview there, travelers will need to show a travel document (like a passport), an international airline ticket, and a physical document showing proof of residency, like a driver's license, mortgage statement, rental payment statement, or utility bill.
The new Enrollment on Departure office is only available for travelers on international flights.
Global Entry is one of five Trusted Traveler Programs administered by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and offers pre-approved travelers an expedited screening process when they return to the U.S. from an international flight. To apply, travelers need to fill out an application, pay a $100 non-refundable fee, and then set up an interview. These interviews can be scheduled ahead of time at a Global Entry Enrollment Center (but they tend to get pretty booked), or completed at one of dozens of Enrollment on Arrival offices in airports across the country and even abroad.
In addition to its new Enrollment on Departure office, Washington Dulles offers an Enrollment on Arrival center located on the lower level of the main terminal.
