A travel day can mean lots of sitting around either waiting for a flight or on board, but it can also mean getting your steps in while having to trek across long airport corridors. And that’s especially true at some larger airport hubs.
In fact, the longest airport walk in the United States belongs to the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport where travelers can hike up to 2.16 miles just getting to their gate, according to a new study from KURU Footwear. The Texas airport — one of the busiest in the world — boasts more than 170 different gates across five different terminals.
Dallas was followed by Washington Dulles International Airport, which had the most on-time departures in the world in February and where travelers can walk up to 1.62 miles, and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, where the longest walk clocks in at 1.52 miles.
“Are you ready for a potential workout on the way to your gate?” KURU Footwear wrote as part of the study. “Many airports involve quite a trek from check-in to boarding, and as air travel continues to grow and hit record numbers as it did in 2023, the length between gates and terminals may only continue to increase.”
While getting through some major airports may feel like running a marathon, others are so small and quaint, it’s not hard to find your gate.
That’s the case with Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky, where the longest walk is only 0.11 miles. The airport, which only features one terminal, hosts flights from major carriers like Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and American Airlines, as well as low-cost carrier Allegiant Air.
Travelers looking for a smaller airport experience can also book flights out of Westchester County Airport in White Plains, New York, which features just a handful of gates and where the longest walking distance is 0.12 miles, according to the study.
