Brazil, known for its diverse landscapes and rich culture, is also home to some of the world’s most luxurious accommodations. The Pousada Reserva do Patacho, a boutique hotel in the heart of the northeastern state of Alagoas, is the perfect example of what it’s like to stay in style in Brazil’s tropical paradise. This property offers a blend of luxury, comfort, and connection with nature that makes it a one of the most special hotels in Brazil.
Situated near the village of Porto de Pedras, Pousada Reserva do Patacho is located amidst a beautiful coconut grove, steps away from a pristine beach. The hotel’s design blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, using sustainable materials and practices to minimize its impact on the environment. The result is an eco-friendly retreat that allows guests to immerse themselves fully in the stunning natural beauty of the region.
One of the hotel’s standout accommodations is the Super Aquarium Bungalow. This exclusive suite features a glass floor with a view into a private aquarium filled with local marine species. Guests can observe the vibrant underwater world without leaving the comfort of their room. The bungalow also has a private pool, a spacious deck for sunbathing, and direct access to the beach, offering an unparalleled level of privacy and luxury.

Brazil has so many beautiful beaches that choosing one is a challenge. To the north, you have Ilha do Amor, Caraíva, and Maragogi; to the south, you have Lagoinha do Leste and Bonete; and in Rio, the famous Ipanema and Copacabana beaches await you! You will find an amazing beach no matter where you dock - but you must ensure that your travel papers are in order, as all U.S. visitors will need a valid visa from 10 January 2024. You can quickly get one in days by visiting this page and access these beautiful beaches.
If you’re heading to Brazil in the new year, there’s an extra step to add to your to-do list. Beginning January 10, travelers from the United States, Canada, and Australia will need to acquire an e-visa in order to enter the country. Until then, citizens of these countries will be able to visit Brazil—for business as well as pleasure, per a press release—without these short-term visitor visas (so long as they are staying for no more than 90 days.)
Brazil will mandate visitors from the U.S., Australia and Canada obtain an e-visa prior to entering the country starting January 10, 2024, according to Embratur, Brazil tourism’s board.

The Brazilian artist Wanda Pimentel’s “Envolvimento” paintings (1968-84) are hard-edged domestic vignettes — kitchens, bathrooms, the insides of cars — rendered in a lean, almost festive palette of mostly reds, greens and yellows. In these claustrophobic spaces, feminine-seeming thighs, ankles, feet and hands make fetishistic cameos, jutting out at awkward angles or lingering near water puddles and toilet-paper rolls. Sometimes, they’re framed by thick, windowpane-like lines that cast the viewer as a peeping Tom. “The house is not only a space of intimacy but also of fear,” says Alexandre Gabriel of São Paulo’s Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel gallery, which will present Pimentel’s work at the Independent 20th Century art fair in New York City next month.
A former fishing village that’s become one of the most posh spots in Portugal, Comporta is still gathering steam. Between the rice fields, cork forests, and long white beaches, there has been a slew of new openings this year, as well as upgrades to existing properties (and some that needed no changes at all) and lots of construction in the works. Here’s what’s worth a look—especially now that the peak summertime crowds have started to head home.
Every couple of years when I was growing up, my family would embark on a European vacation. My dad is Italian, and my mom is Spanish, so we'd fly to their respective countries to see family and do some sightseeing.

How has your heritage influenced your food?My father’s family were from Spain and Italy. When they came to Brazil during the Second World War, the first place they stopped in was a port city called Paranaguá. It’s where you’ll find the freshest fish and shellfish. At my grandparents’ home, I learned different ways of cooking with seafood. My mum’s side came from Lebanon; from them, I learned to use spices like za’atar and cumin, and different grains. Food is very important in the Arab community, so growing up, we’d sit at the table and talk and eat. That’s something I continue to do, not just with my kids but with the community at large, too. We used to live in the countryside, so I have a strong connection with farming and animals. I understood the importance of growing your own food and knowing how the process works. This is what’s brought me to what I do now.
