United Airlines is dreaming of moussaka and ouzo as the airline prepares to launch a new seasonal flight from Chicago to Athens this spring.
The airline will launch daily service between Chicago’s O'Hare International Airport and the Greek capital city starting on May 23, United shared with Travel + Leisure. The non-stop flights, which will operate on a Boeing 787-8 aircraft, will fly through Aug. 12.
“United continues to have the largest and most diverse network across the Atlantic and we’re thrilled to add another exciting destination for customers flying out of Chicago O’Hare to explore with our new summer service to Athens,” Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances, said in a statement shared with T+L.
In addition to Chicago, United will fly to Athens from its hubs in Newark and Washington D.C., which will re-launch on March 30 and April 14, respectively. Thanks to the new route, United said it would increase its flights to Athens this summer by nearly 25 percent.
Beyond Athens, United plans to offer several other transatlantic flights from Chicago, including to 15 European cities like Amsterdam, Brussels, Edinburgh, Reykjavik, Milan, and more.
The new Athens route comes as United plans to launch seasonal flights between Washington, D.C., and Anchorage on May 23, as well as add more flights between the United States and Canada with service to nine different Canadian cities.
“We know people want to get outdoors this summer and United is making it easier than ever to get to fun destinations across North America,” Quayle said in a statement shared with T+L.

With its crystalline waters and sublime beaches, Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda, a 20- kilometer tranche of seaside running along the island’s northeast coast, has been a go-to for the world’s elite for decades. When Prince Karim, Aga Khan IV, who led a consortium that developed the area in the 1960s, first surveyed a then barren landscape he reportedly said, “There is a multitude of fine sandy beaches and no one to walk on them.” But once the posh retreat—sustainably planned and created by top architects of the day—opened for business it drew a rarified crowd, including Greta Garbo, Grace Kelly and Gianni Agnelli, who came to experience the unique beaches, or at least gaze at them with admiration from their nearby yachts.
