Virtuoso, the global network specializing in luxury and experiential travel, recently published the findings from its 2024 Luxe Reports, a survey that found 46 percent of the network’s travel advisors found their travelers are concerned about climate change during their travel planning process.
Climate change is impacting travel decisions: 75 percent of advisors said travelers are choosing to travel to destinations where the weather is less extreme, 71 percent said their clients are visiting destinations during off-peak travel during better weather conditions and 25 percent said their clients are choosing more sustainable travel offerings to reduce their carbon footprint.
The report surveyed over 2,000 Virtuoso-affiliated travel advisors from over 50 countries.
For over twelve years, Virtuoso has been supporting responsible and sustainable tourism with three pillars: Protecting the Planet, Celebrating and Honoring Cultures and Supporting Local Economies, many of which are practiced across its preferred partners.
“Virtuoso has long been a proud advocate of sustainable tourism. From our Sustainability Council and Community to awards and dedicated editorials in every issue of Virtuoso, The Magazine, we support the efforts of our partners and seek to educate our advisors on sustainable travel,” said Virtuoso’s Vice President, Sustainability Javier Arredondo.
“With a goal of making sustainability a greater factor in consumer choice, it’s inspiring to see more clients taking it into account, thanks in large part to our travel advisors who are creating a dialogue on selecting destinations, hotels, cruise lines, tour operators and other partners that share the same commitment,” continued Arredondo. “Using a Virtuoso advisor when planning upcoming vacations will not only help travelers ensure they support businesses that share their values but also assist them in navigating the ever-changing world of travel.”

There’s plenty of evidence that 2024 will be a watershed year for luxury travel.
Junkanoo, a polychromatic burst of music, dance, storytelling, and parades practiced in the Bahamas, was recently inscribed on the 2023 UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It’s the first intangible—a practice, skill, tradition, or craft—in the island nation recognized by the international cultural organization.
Architectural Digest released its top 10 “emerging luxury cities” in October. Its criteria — activities, properties, dining, annual income, diversity, and safety — are all geared toward residents. But what do these cities hold for visitors seeking an exceptional vacation?
Several years ago, my now-husband, Alex, and I spent a few months sailing around Indonesia, experiencing both highs — turquoise waters, freshly caught fish and stunning sunsets — and lows, including a broken engine. We were also there during Ramadan, a special time to be traveling in the world’s most populous Muslim nation.
Ask people to name the places they’ve visited in the Caribbean and Bequia isn’t the first name you’ll hear. That’s an advantage — especially when you want all the beaches, beauty and local charm of an island vacation without feeling like you’re surrounded by more tourists than sand. And for the ultimate escape look no further than the newly opened Grenadine Villas overlooking Friendship Bay Beach, from the island’s top resort Bequia Beach Hotel.
For me, travel is about meeting people, being a lifelong learner and seeing the world through different perspectives.
