The hundreds of pink-and-white cherry blossoms that bloom each year symbolize the start of spring in our nation’s capital. But when peak bloom occurs varies by year, and is dependent on the weather — a few warm days could cause the blooms to come early in March, while a cold snap could keep them from opening up and painting D.C. pink until later in April.
The National Park Service, though, just announced that this year’s peak bloom is expected to take place March 23-26, which is on par with the last couple of years, though earlier than the average April 4 peak bloom date.
Still, the National Park Service says it’s impossible to nail down the peak bloom date with any certainty more than 10 days in advance.
Nearly 4,000 cherry blossom trees are planted in Potomac Park, circling the Tidal Basin and continuing on to the monument grounds. Peak bloom happens when 70% of the Yoshino Cherry blossoms open.
The best time to see the cherry blossoms tends to be the four to seven days after peak bloom begins. Blossoms, though, can stick around for a couple of weeks if the weather is calm and there aren’t any major rainstorms.
The Tidal Basin is the most popular spot to view and photograph the cherry blossom bloom, and visitors can get some great photos of the Jefferson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Martin Luther King, Jr. memorials in the backdrop.
The singular white blossoms of the Yoshino trees create a cloud-like look effect when they’re blooming. Kwanzan is another popular cherry blossom variety in Washington, D.C., and most of these pale pink trees are growing in East Potomac Park.
Other spots to find cherry blossoms around the capital, according to Washington, D.C.’s tourism department, include the National Arboretum, as well as Anacostia Park, Dumbarton Oaks in Georgetown, Stanton Park and Oxon Run Park.
Another unique way to witness cherry blossoms is through a projection from March 20-23 on the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
If you’re not in town, the National Park Service also has a cherry blossom cam you can tune into to see the blossoms.
The National Cherry Blossom Festival will take place from March 20 to April 14, 2024. The event celebrates the cherry trees, which originated as a gift in 1912 from the mayor of Tokyo.
The festival includes several events to celebrate the bloom, including an opening ceremony on March 23, the Cherry Blossom Kite Festival on March 30, Petalpalooza with live music and a fireworks show on April 6, and a parade on April 13.
Several events take place surrounding the bloom, including the Cherry Blossom 5K on April 6 and the Cherry Blossom 10-mile race on April 7.
