The Flowers Celebrated in Festivals Across Japan

Azaleas, a more compact member of the rhododendron family, grow throughout the Japanese archipelago. The shrub, with its often fuzzy evergreen leaves and funnel-shaped flowers, is a fixture of private gardens, shrines and national parks. In spring, when the blossoms are at their most vivid — in saturated shades of pink, purple or orange, striped or speckled — dozens of azalea festivals crop up, from subtropical Fukuoka to temples in the middle of Tokyo to the mountains of Hokkaido.

How the Protea Became a Symbol for South Africa

Before there were seven continents, there were proteas. Related to sycamores and to the sacred lotus, they’re native to what’s now Australia and South America, as well as to South Africa, where they’re most abundant in the Cape Floristic Region, a biodiverse swath of land in the country’s southwest. Wanderers of its peaks, valleys and dunes might miss the Protea nana, also known as the , or “shy flower,” because its bell-shaped blooms advance downward into the brush, but there are plenty of other species to see. (The name “protea” comes from the shape-shifting Greek god Proteus.) There’s the Pink Mink, whose petals are tipped with black hairs; the spiky-soft pincushion protea, with its dome of protruding styles; and the King protea, characterized by an oversize inflorescence featuring a ring of bracts surrounding an orblike grouping of velvety florets.

A Trip Through the Pink, Fragrant Rose Fields of Oman

Each spring, thanks to irrigation techniques that date back to antiquity, the harsh, vertiginously terraced slopes of Jabal Akhdar, a lush and green peak in Oman’s Hajar Mountains, radiate pink. From April to mid-May, riotous fields of Rosa damascena, the damask rose, suffuse the air with their perfume, a sweet, delicate scent that the 20th-century Syrian poet Nizar Qabbani described as “the history of all fragrance.”

Amaranths Were Nearly Wiped Out by Colonization. Now, They’re Making a Return.

Around March, the valleys to the north and east of Cuzco, Peru, begin to gleam with pink and crimson — “crowned with amaranth,” the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once wrote, “as with flame.” Native to South America, this scentless species of amaranth (Amaranthus caudatus), distinctive for its tentacle-like inflorescences, is prized for the nutty-tasting, protein-rich seeds that develop from its flowers. (Its leaves are also edible.) Known in Peru by its Quechua name, , it was domesticated by Andean peoples some 3,000 years ago and later became a source of sustenance for the Incas and their contemporaries. (A different variety of amaranth was grown by the Aztecs of Mexico.) But the 16th-century Spanish colonizers, writes Jamaica Kincaid in “An Encyclopedia of Gardening for Colored Children” (2024), forced the Incas and the Aztecs to abandon their crops and replace them “with barley, wheat and other European grains.”

For Dior's Kim Jones, Rajasthan Supplies Endless Inspiration

“I first came to Rajasthan around 2012 and completely fell in love with the people, the way of life, and the colors,” says the English fashion designer Kim Jones, who has remained captivated by the indigos, shocking pinks, and oranges of the Indian state ever since. “I've always had a fascination with heritage craft, and that first trip inspired a love of Indian textiles and embroideries.” For Jones, sources of such inspiration extend to Rajasthani architecture—the palaces and the people who built them—as well as a wider “innate sense of style” found across India, “mixing utility, formality, and immaculate tailoring.” After a string of return trips, Jones found that hints of those design sensibilities and meticulous attention to detail had trickled down into his own work—accessories in particular, in which he says “the intricacy of maharaja style is reimagined into a modern graphic look.” Here, Jones shares the places he never leaves off his itinerary, including the spot for regional dishes like murgh tikka, his favorite market to source tie-dyed textiles, and a tented camp in the wilderness.

Charleston's Iconic Pink Hotel Is Newly Revamped for the Modern Traveler

There’s something special about Charleston, South Carolina. Spanish moss drips from the limbs of centuries-old oaks, and the ghosts of bygone eras wander the streets on cool evening breezes. As I step through the front doors of the historic Mills House hotel, I’m quickly reminded that all of the things that make Charleston special are perfectly captured within these walls. If only they could talk.

What Are the Seven Wonders of the World?

The Seven Wonders of the World: it’s a group as iconic as The Beatles, as ancient as history itself, and as lore-heavy as a Hinge date from Bushwick who really found themselves in Bali. And while seven may seem like a compact number—as with any great classic—there’s been a slew of reboots and sequels since the original list from the ancient world dropped nearly 2,000 years ago. We compiled our own list earlier this year, and have coined some sites ‘Eighth Wonders’ (including in this fun piece about New Zealand’s pink and white terraces from Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings). Even the so-called original list is likely a remix too, as the oft-cited first version from ancient Greek historian Herodotus exists only in reference, having been long lost since its days on the Museum of Alexandria’s shelves.

Yvette Mayorga’s Family History Is Baked Into Her Work

Yvette Mayorga’s exhibition at the Museo de Arte de Zapopan in Guadalajara takes her back to the place she always talks about leaving. Throughout her career, she has made art about her family’s journey from the Mexican state of Jalisco to Chicago, exploring her immigrant parents’ struggle to gain an economic foothold in the United States, starting in the 1970s. Mayorga, who is 33, also examines how first-generation Americans like herself sort out their cultural identities.

Looking for a New Way to See Iceland? Bring Your Knitting Needles.

I spent my second day in Iceland in a hotel on the outskirts of Reykjavik, trying resolutely to knit. Gathered around a coffee table with me were Ragga Sjofu Jóhannsdóttir, my instructor, and my friend Lindis Sloan, both experienced knitters who fluidly worked the yarn with barely a glance at their hands.

What to Wear to a Destination Wedding: Menswear Edition

My controversial take: Men's wedding guest attire (or menswear, suiting, whatever you want to call it—anyone can wear it) is actually quite easy. I’ve attended an unspeakable number of weddings and, if I may say so, I’m always complimented on my outfits as a wedding guest. My secret? The dress code is my best friend—and it can easily be yours too. Learn the rules and stick to them, or break them when the vibe is right.

How to Clean White Sneakers

White sneakers just might be the most universal wardrobe staple, yet they are also the most difficult to keep pristine. As a kid, I remember being so frustrated that my white Keds were always a grime-caked shade of gray that as a grown-up, my shoe collection became filled with black sneakers. But let’s be honest, there’s a casual chicness to any outfit topped off with white sneakers that other colors just don’t quite achieve.
