Following years of uncertainty and restrictions, 2024 promises to be a year of significant travel as global airline capacity has returned to pre-pandemic levels. Miquel Ros, founder of Allplane and deputy editor at AeroTime, says we’re currently seeing two major trends in air travel. “First, we’re witnessing the revival of ultra-long-haul routes by several airlines,” he tells Traveler. “And second, the introduction of a new generation of narrow-body aircraft with extended range enables airlines to operate longer routes with improved profitability, opening up a whole new world of opportunities for route development, particularly for low-cost carriers."
The increased capacity also suggests that airlines may be ready, at last, to meet the pent-up demand for both leisure and business travel. With carriers now offering a number of seats comparable to those available before the COVID-19 outbreak, travelers can once again enjoy a wider array of destinations and potentially more competitive pricing.

Amanpulo, a luxury resort on a private island in the Cuyo Archipelago of Northern Palawan in the Philippines.
United Airlines became the first carrier to offer nonstop flights from the continental US to the Philippines in October when it launched daily flights from San Francisco to Manila. The new route (flown by the beloved Boeing 777-300ER) makes it much simpler to spend a few days exploring the Philippine capital city before jetting off to any of the nearly 2,000 inhabited islands that comprise the archipelago nation.
For those seeking the surfing capital's thrill, Siargao is a top choice with its barrel-shaped waves and vibrant nightlife. If luxury is calling you, enjoy a private island adventure at the marvelous Amanpulo resort on Pamalican Island. For a more rustic stay, Calaguas' untouched beaches invite travelers to camp under the stars, while Boracay’s White Beach remains a top spot for a classic beach escape. After venturing through Palawan’s limestone formations and azure lagoons, retire to a beach or treetop villa at El Nido Pangulasian or an overwater bungalow at Cauyuan Island Resort.

American Airlines is introducing several new benefits for its AAdvantage loyalty program members. Namely, there are more ways to utilize miles and Loyalty Points. “Have a safe flight” may be more of a customary farewell than a genuine concern for the safety of modern air travel, but we've all had those mid-air onsets of hyperawareness that flying in a metal tube through the sky at 500 miles per hour is certainly no small feat (some of us more than most). While there are many details to worry about when planning a trip, one thing no traveler wants to be concerned with is whether the plane they’re flying on is safe.
I used to really like air travel—largely because of a Disney movie from the late seventies called The Rescuers. The leads are mice: a chic one, voiced by Eva Gabor; and a frumpy one, voiced by Bob Newhart. They’re on assignment to save an orphan girl who was abducted for the purpose of retrieving a diamond from the Louisiana bayou—but first they have to get there from New York City, which involves riding in a sardine tin strapped to an albatross. When the bird wings off the roof of a skyscraper at sunset, poor Bob is practically peeing himself. But not Eva. “Oooo! I just luv takeoffs!” she says. “It’s just like being on a rollerscoater.”
