Most people would think of Paris or Rome when considering a gourmet break, but the island of Tenerife would probably not even be considered. However, the island now has seven Michelin-star restaurants holding nine stars between them and numerous other restaurants in the Michelin Guide.
Six of the Michelin-star restaurants are contained within Tenerife's luxury hotels, so it makes sense to stay at one of these or do a twin-centre holiday if you have more time.
Ritz Carlton Abama is home to the two Michelin star M.B. and the one Michelin star, Kabuki. This large resort has a great selection of dining options, including the new Verde Mar, which focuses on vegetables as the star of the show, with meat and fish as the side dishes. The resort is currently completing a modern refurbishment of its rooms, but it still conveys a classic element with a Moorish feel from the deep pink hues of the buildings.
Built over a hillside tumbling down to the beach, the resort offers everything you need for a relaxing gourmet break without needing to leave the resort. For the ultimate luxury break, book one of the villa rooms, which comes with access to a private pool and lounge with tapas and drinks each day.
The Royal Hideaway Corales beach has a more contemporary feel and is situated in La Caleta near Adeje. It is also an adults-only resort with a luxurious spa. Next door is the Royal Hideaway Suites, designed as a family resort, so you could also consider staying here if you want to visit with your children. El Rincón de Juan Carlos and Restaurante San-Hô are the two Michelin star restaurants at the hotel.
Finally, the Bahía del Duque hotel in Adeje features the one-star Nub. The hotel is set on Duque Beach in Tenerife and is surrounded by 6 hectares of subtropical gardens.
M.B. by Martin Berasategui is the more formal and traditional of the two Michelin-star restaurants at The Ritz Carlton Abama. You start in the evening in a relaxed setting while you enjoy an aperitif and the beautifully presented canapes. You can also retire here after dinner for a coffee and the petit fours.
For the main event, you can head into the white-washed dining room or onto the terrace in the warmer months. You can choose from an à la carte and two tasting menus, one based on the restaurant's best dishes over the years. M.B. was the first restaurant in Tenerife to receive a Michelin star and still holds two stars nine years later. Chef Erlantz Gorostiza recreates the unique dishes devised by culinary legend Martín Berasategui, rooted in Basque cuisine.
Kabuki is the second more contemporary restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton, which holds one star. The restaurant offers a modern take on Japanese food and includes a sushi bar as well as formal
