Anyone who knows me is all too aware about my affinity for Greek food. I love the clean flavors, olive oil on everything and minimal use of seasonings that allow the natural flavors of the ingredients to shine. As a country, I also love Greece and am lucky to have visited several times.
In New York, I “travel” to Greece by hitting Greek restaurants. One of my favorite places used to be Korali on the Upper East Side because of the food, of course, but almost more so because of Gregory Politis, a part-owner at the time who ran the day-to-day show.
He welcomed customers at the door with a smile and played the best host, working the room and chatting with guests like they were old friends. He also had incredible taste and a knack for finding the highest quality produce, seafood and wines and introducing them to diners who came back again and again.
Gregory eventually moved onto from Korali to try other ventures, but opening his own space was always in the cars and a longtime dream.
Fast forward to today, and that dream has been brought to life with Mykonian House. This time, Gregory has a collaborator in his beautiful venture- the jeweler and entrepreneur Alina Borys who is his partner in both business and life.
Located on East 83rd Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues, near the MET, it’s a gem of a 62 seat spot inclusive of its sleek bar that has the convivial feel of an island Greek home. The staff greets and treats you like family, the wines are delicious, the pours are generous, and the food is simple and delicious, like Greek cuisine should be.
The seafood is perfectly grilled over charcoal, and the branzino is a signature. Opened in the kitchen and dressed with Greek capers, white pepper and a delicious ladolemono- lemon olive oil sauce. It’s supposed to be two, but I can eat it alone.
Throw in Mykonian House’s chic island aesthetic of a space awash is warm white, and you’re in Greece, not New York, at least for the hours you’re there. Throughout the night, Gregory is present with his endearing charm and invites conservation with everyone, whether they’re first-timers or regulars.
The Upper East Side is a sea of average and pricey Italian eateries so it’s no wonder that Mykonian House has been a hotspot since it opened in the fall. It’s THE place to dine in the area, and reservations are no easy feat. The crowd includes hip couples, families, groups of friends and even a celebrity- and more than one to be sure.
After all, this is a place where everyone is welcome. It’s all heart and soul.
I spoke with Gregory who told me more his Greek hideaway that’s a secret no more.
Why did you decide to open Mykonian House? What is the inspiration, and where does the name come from or mean?

I live in Athens, Greece, and often take ferries to explore the Greek Islands.
Visiting Greece means endless opportunities beyond the gorgeous ocean vistas of islands in sparkling Aegean waters. Here, Celestyal has exciting and unique cultural encounters that truly bring visitors inside the real Greece, experiencing authentic cultural encounters. The company’s experiences scratch deeper beneath the surface to take travelers closer to the heart of Greece, where they can immerse themselves in excursions featuring local people, homegrown flavors, and stories passed down through the generations.
We are staying in the House of Light (from £62 a night, £90 in summer, sleeps three, on Airbnb), which is a work of art where even the shower drains through locally handcrafted ceramic. I pad along barefoot to the terrace and sit down on the stone bench in the sun, looking across a field of daisies, poppies and mallow to the crumbling dovecote.
What's the highest-rated cruise destination in the world?
Often misunderstood as a chaotic urban jungle or a mere pit-stop before hopping the islands, Greece’s capital is having a shining moment. Driven by young Athenians who have moved back to the city following years of financial crisis, Athens is experiencing a renaissance in its arts and culture scene. While the Cyclades have made Condé Nast Traveler’s list of the Best Places to Go in 2024, for those en route to the islands, Athens and its bon vivant attitude await, and demand more than just a single night to be discovered.
Get out your bucket list; it’s time to cross off a major line item: Greece.
As its mythical Sirens were reputed to do, Greece has long lured travelers to its scintillating shores.
A partnership with SLH marks a new chapter in the hotel’s journey, emphasizing its dedication to creating unforgettable guest experiences.
The accommodation boasts soft furnishings in neutral colours in a soothing style which is reflected throughout the public areas of the resort.
The opening of the new Milan Linate – Malta Luqa connection in the upcoming summer season further enhances ITA Airways’ offer on the Malta destination and adds to the flight already operated from Rome Fiumicino with 2 weekly frequencies that will become 3 from April and 7 from June.
