Alaska Airlines is expanding its presence from Portland, Oregon, with an increased seat capacity of more than 25 percent, the carrier announced Monday.
«We've been the largest carrier in Portland for more than 20 years,” said Kirsten Amrine, vice president of revenue management and network planning for Alaska Airlines, in a statement. “We don't take that for granted. It's important for us to provide our guests with a variety of convenient flight options at PDX, along with the addition of new routes. We know travelers have a choice, and we want them to fly with us.”
This summer, Portland is poised for a record schedule with more than 20 daily departures, including recently announced flights to Nashville and Miami. Along with the announcement, Alaska will increase frequencies on several popular routes along the West Coast and beyond:
That’s not all for Alaska’s growth plans from its Portland hub. Due to increased demand, several seasonal routes from the Rose City to Billings, Mont., Kansas City, and Minneapolis will be renewed through the end of 2024.
In total, Alaska plans to serve 53 nonstop destinations from this Pacific Northwestern airport. Along with the announcement, the airline has shared that its new 10,000-square-foot airport lounge at Portland International Airport is scheduled to open by 2026 to complement the major capacity growth.
The announcement comes weeks after Alaska reintroduced the 737 MAX-9 into service after the mid-air blowout incident. At the end of January, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved the inspection and maintenance process of the 65 MAX-9 aircraft Alaska has in its fleet.
To thank loyal travelers through the service disruption, Alaska is currently offering a promotion for double elite-qualifying miles (EQMs) on flights flown through the end of the month.

Baggage fees alone were worth an estimated $33.3 billion to airlines last year.
Checking a bag when flying with several U.S. airlines is, once again, getting more expensive. It’s been about five years since the major full-service U.S. carriers collectively raised checked bag fees to $30 and $40 for the first and second checked bags, respectively. Now, some airlines are back at it, making it costlier for passengers to access the plane’s cargo hold.
United Airlines just became the latest carrier to increase checked baggage fees this year, implementing the change over the weekend.
Alaska Airlines is making it easier to see April’s epic solar eclipse with a series of flights heading to destinations along the path of totality — and they're selling out. The specific routes, which fly to places like Mazatlán, Mexico, Texas, and Ohio, have seen a threefold increase in demand compared to previous years, Alaska Airlines shared with Travel + Leisure. And that increased demand has led to increasingly sold-out flights.
If you enjoy (responsibly) imbibing a crisp, cold beer now and then, you probably also enjoy trying new brews when you travel. Now, you don't have to wait until you reach your destination before popping the tab on a new-to-you beer when you fly with Alaska Airlines.
An Alaska Airlines passenger stabbed an off-duty law enforcement officer with an improvised weapon, an FBI agent's affidavit says.
