Extra big and bright, the moon is shining above our planet in a magnificent natural spectacle that features not just one but two supermoon shows for August.
Now and for the next few days, we have the “Sturgeon Supermoon,” also known as green corn moon, grain moon, flying-up moon, harvest moon, ricing moon, black cherries moon and mountain shadow moon, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, and by the end of the month it will be the rare ‘Blue Supermoon’, an event that on average happens only once every three years.
This super full moon is the second of four consecutive moons that occur when it orbits closest to Earth while full. Supermoons are about 16% brighter than an average moon. The last two of the four supermoons this year will be the ‘Blue Supermoon’ on August 30 and the ‘Harvest Moon’ on September 28.
The ‘sturgeon moon’ — a name that, as most of the others, is an English interpretation from Native American tribal languages — was dubbed so by Algonquins from the Great Lakes region. They derived the name from the abundance of sturgeon fish that occurs this time of year.
Today, the lake sturgeon is practically extinct due to overfishing, pollution and other damage to their habitat.
