When people think about beers in New York City, most people think of the buzzy craft breweries of Brooklyn and yes, they are excellent but one of the best places to drink in NYC is in lower Manhattan, where excellent beer bars are mere blocks from each other and you can enjoy yourself with a semi-relaxed NYC style of quiet that the East and West Village, The Bowery and Alphabet City neighborhoods afford. Here are some of my favorite places in drink in Lower Manhattan.
Some will deride McSorley’s as a silly tourist trap but I disagree. It’s one of the only places you can drink like you went back in time (although thankfully they allow women now), as sawdust is still on the floor and your beer choices are two: light or dark (get the dark). It’s also cash only and there’s a charming, surly waitstaff that don’t have time for your questions that add to the ambiance. I took a good friend from Scotland there one rainy night and we sat with a bunch of British lads who were studying at NYU. They taught us about the best places to go clubbing in Brooklyn.
A small beer bar mere steps from McSorley’s, Proletariat is the beer geek’s heaven. The beer list is perfectly curated and leans heavy on lagers while also showcasing some rarer, more exciting offerings in beer. Their new kitchen also showcases vegan pub cuisine at its finest.
In the middle of the West Village, The Blind Tiger Ale House is a classic NYC beer drinking establishment that has been one of the best places to drink beer in Manhattan for a while. I find it’s fun to go here when it’s crowded for an after work drink. The beer list is always solid and caters to all tastes with a great selection of craft and international beers.
In the basement of a high rise in a very nice newfangled food hall, The Grand Delancey is partly the brainchild of Greg Engert, a pioneering beer bar manager from Washington, D.C. who was one of the first to categorize beer menus by flavor (hoppy, malty) vs. actual beer style. This place is large with lots of room to stretch out and try some great beers from local options or check out their vast, expansive bottle list. You can order directly from the bartenders some of the food choices from the neighboring food hall. The scallion pancake with curry is a particular favorite of mine.
One of the classic beer shop/taprooms that is a hallmark of NYC beer drinking culture; no one does it better than Alphabet City Beer Company, whose homey vibe and large community table make you feel instantly at ease. The curated beer list is always well thought out and there are lots of good options for beer to go. I love how the expensive beer is labeled in their cooler as “fancy sh*t” so you know they don’t take themselves too seriously.

British skies dazzle when the sun sinks, and there are a handful of dark sky reserves and discovery sites where the lack of light pollution can help stargazing enthusiasts feel that bit closer to the universe. Take a winter stomp across freezing moors or a late-night summer drive up to a remote hilltop to find a sky full of stars with distant planets glittering overhead on clear nights. Often, there’s no need for a telescope either — star clusters such as Pleiades and Hyades, the Milky Way, nebulae and shooting stars can often be seen with the naked eye or with the help of a pair of cheap binoculars and stargazing apps such as Stellarium Mobile.
Sweden is considered to be one of the most sustainable countries in the world… but it also happens to produce an impressive volume of internationally renowned designers and fashion houses given the size of the country.
Now that the northern hemisphere is firmly in the cooler months of the year—and it’s only getting colder—it’s time to talk fleece. For bitter winter chills, fleece is hard to beat because the fabric is made to be both lightweight and incredibly insulating. And in recent years, fleece technology has improved so much that the variety on offer is now immense both in quality, style, and price. If you thought that Colorado bros have the market cornered with their Patagonia zip-ups, it’s time to reconsider the category altogether.I was previously super hesitant about fleece because, for most of my life, I assumed its pieces all looked the same. But while shopping in Manchester last year, I came upon a button-up fleece chore jacket with a rounded collar from UK-based Universal Works that changed my mind about what fleece could look like. But in speaking with Universal Works design director and co-founder David Keyte about the material, I learned that the name is actually a catchall that could mean different things depending on where you are. “There really are so many different fleeces,” Keyte says. “It’s an amazing technical invention that replaced knitted wools and cottons to become a flexible layer of clothing that moves with the body and is warm. Fleece became the modern version of those traditional fabrics, but it’s made of synthetic fibers that hold warmth and are lightweight.”My jacket is a wool-blend fleece (that almost looks like boiled wool), which Keyte says is great for heat regulation. I use it from fall on; either on its own or layered underneath a heavier coat when it gets bitingly cold out. But regardless of which brand or style you go for, that’s kind of the benefit of fleece when it comes to outerwear or as a shirt or sweater: They offer enough warmth when worn on their own, but most are light enough to be another protective layer to partner with heavier items for harsher winter days. Here, you'll find our picks for 28 fleece items that will serve you well from now through spring.
If we adopted a child’s-eye view of the world, how would we choose to have fun? It’s likely to be about more than the usual incentives, such as an ice cream, suggests research from Nature Communications. According to the journal, children as young as four seek experiences that deliver positive results, guide action, answer questions about the world — and are just plain fun. Whether it’s getting up-close with crustaceans on a rockpooling adventure, diving into a good book at a literature festival, learning to surf, taking to the stage or gazing at the stars, these 12 UK-based experiences deliver hands-on learning and creativity.
The eclectic city of Istanbul, the fantastical rock forms of Cappadocia, the ancient ruins of Ephesus, and the glimmering Mediterranean and Aegean coastlines are Türkiye’s biggest draws, but each region of the country has something distinct to offer.
Many experiences in Chiang Mai are ideal for the budget traveler – grazing on street food, enjoying relaxing traditional Thai massages, sipping red iced tea, renting a scooter to buzz out to waterfalls and hot springs – but everyone knows that the best things in life are free. And Chiang Mai has experiences by the bucketload that cost absolutely nothing at all.
Be it hammering down heart-thumping blacks in the ice-blue shadow of Mont Blanc, ski-touring beneath glistening saw-chiseled peaks or tree skiing through picture-book forests, France sports an unrivaled variety of skiing – for all abilities, styles and budgets.
As options for the traditional chalet ski break have dwindled and prices risen, venturing to Europe’s far corners and beyond for a ski break can reap rewards. Costs are often lower, while luxury accommodation can be similarly priced to budget options in mainstream European ski resorts. As well as being potentially cheaper, skiing in territory off the beaten track can offer a rich cultural experience, plus better flight routes, less crowded slopes, sunnier days and a friendlier welcome.
