Sweden is considered to be one of the most sustainable countries in the world… but it also happens to produce an impressive volume of internationally renowned designers and fashion houses given the size of the country.
It should come as no surprise then that its capital city is a hotbed for really good thrift shopping—like really good. We spent a week checking out thrift shops and second-hand stores all across Stockholm and let’s just say our wardrobe and wallet are better for it. It’s here you’ll find like-new Swedish brands that cost hundreds in designer boutiques in the U.S. We’re talking Acne Studios and Filippa K for less than the price of a cocktail in Manhattan.
Planning a trip to Stockholm? The following second-hand and thrift shops are where you’ll want to go if you’re hoping to score a sustainable and unique souvenir that won’t break the bank.
There are a handful of Stockholms Stadsmission locations throughout Stockholm—but the best one for scoring on Acne Studios has to be the location in Kungsholmen where you’ll find racks upon racks of designer denim for less than $30. Do yourself a favor and refuel after scoring treasures at nearby Cafe Fix—the oldest cafe in Stockholm with possibly the best kanelbulle in town.
Myrorna is another small chain of thrift shops that you’ll find all over Stockholm. There is no location in particular that does it the best; you can count on a great curation of mid-level Swedish and European brands that range from Mango and H&M to Pierre Cardin and Zara. There’s also typically a great selection of gently used footwear from popular brands. We found a pair of like-new Stan Smith sneakers for $15!
If you prefer a very carefully curated selection of goods, you’ll want to check out Humana Second Hand. This thrift shop is incredibly selective and caters to those looking for cool streetwear. We recommend the location in Södermalm which also has a Stockholms Stadsmission and various other second-hand and consignment shops on the same block.
You’ll find Arkivet all over Stockholm and we recommend popping into as many as possible. The second-hand shop is well-curated and manicured but still offers surprising finds at great prices. The shops themselves are laid out more like designer boutiques than thrift shop which makes for a great shopping experience as well.
Thrift shopping has evolved over the years to be a more curated experience—but Beyond Retro offers something a little different. The second-hand store stocks old-school and retro apparel that appeals to those who prefer a yesteryear aesthetic. You’ll still find great prices—but the vibe is distinctly more vintage than just second-hand (in a very good way).

Over the last five years, the world has changed a lot. A global pandemic ground much of the global population to a halt with travel the most restricted it's ever been in my lifetime – and most likely yours too. Russia’s war on Ukraine and now Israel’s war on Hamas in Gaza are causing shockwaves around the world, reshaping the statuses of countries and the rights of their citizens.
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Diane Higgins, one of the 155 people who survived the "Miracle on the Hudson" crash alongside her mother, Lucille Palmer, in 2009. It has been edited for length and clarity.
As someone who grew up in Wisconsin and moved to New York City a decade ago, I enjoy analyzing the similarities and differences between the two regions I call home.

Ask a New York City regular where to stay in Manhattan and they’ll tell you NoMad is the coolest downtown neighborhood. The clue is in the name: NoMad, or Madison Square North, bounces right off the north end of Madison Square Park. A recent revival has brought a surge in luxury hotels, inventive bistros, and voguish bars to this historic 30-block nook. NoMad hotels are close (but not too close) to Times Square while Chelsea and the Flatiron District are on the doorstep. The “North of Madison Square Park” neighborhood is ripe with luxury hotels for sightseeing and nightlife in NYC, and the new INNSiDE by Meliá New York NoMad leads the pack.

Sweden might be famous for its meatballs—but that doesn’t mean that vegetarian and vegan travelers have to miss out on the decadent dish. The Nordic country is one of the worldwide leaders in sustainability which means finding plant-based alternatives is extremely easy (and delicious), especially in Stockholm.
Ask people to name the places they’ve visited in the Caribbean and Bequia isn’t the first name you’ll hear. That’s an advantage — especially when you want all the beaches, beauty and local charm of an island vacation without feeling like you’re surrounded by more tourists than sand. And for the ultimate escape look no further than the newly opened Grenadine Villas overlooking Friendship Bay Beach, from the island’s top resort Bequia Beach Hotel.
