Bowman’s Travel Brief: Residents Against Tourism

I live near a lake, which means my city sees more travelers passing through during these summer months.
The downtown area of the small town I live in has seen an overhaul in recent years. The much-needed upgrades to our small downtown street have increased the flow of people coming through.
This has been great for the businesses, but of course with more people comes more cars…and also more boats during the summer. So, this naturally leads to some people in the community voicing their displeasure about it all on social media.
I think it’s a bit ridiculous, given we’re a small town that shouldn’t overlook its growth potential.
No matter where you turn in the world though, there will always be those residents who are against this and then also those residents who are welcoming to tourism, understanding its value and need. It is how so many in this world make their living, through the dollars of travelers.
Many of Barcelona’s residents are fed up with housing issues and recently took to the streets to protest mass tourism issues. Some of them ended up spraying tourists with water.
But there are those in Barcelona that depend on tourism for their income, and the same can be said about Amsterdam, Venice, Hawaii, and many other destinations currently feeling the impact from overtourism.
Governments face tough tasks in these major cities. My small town will never experience it to their level, but there is one thing we’ll have in common – there will always be residents against tourists.
What do you think about the overtourism issues around the world today?
