As a wheelchair user living in the United Kingdom, I’d grown familiar with the cold shoulder of the country’s uncompromising listed buildings, people’s awkward ways around disability, and our poorly enforced accessibility laws. So when I experienced life in California for the first time about a decade ago, it felt like a warm embrace.
“I could get used to this,” I thought haughtily as I cruised over the Golden Gate Bridge, my wheelchair strapped beside me in the passenger seat of a rental car fitted with hand controls, trying to put my finger on what makes California so remarkably different. The easy-to-find adaptations; the newer buildings; the wider, smoother sidewalks; the expansiveness of the people and the surrounding scenery. “How is my day?” you ask. “Well, uniquely accessible, thank you very much!”
Whenever there is an occasion to return to the state, I leap at the chance, eager to be back in the land of the step-free, where wheelchair access is mandatory, “handicapped” toilets are often integrated, and the mental load of the physically disabled can be temporarily replaced with a breezier outlook.
Be it the minimum of physically accessible accommodation or the gold standard of inclusive experiences, California, in my opinion, has it all. Despite years of traveling as a wheelchair user, going solo is a luxury I can only afford in certain places—and California is one of them. Below, I’ve made a guide with everything you need to know about accessible travel in California.
There are direct flights to all major California airports from the UK. My preference is always to fly with Virgin Atlantic, but there are several options. Direct flights avoid any complications with transfers and, with several airports to choose from, you can always see if there are deals to neighboring airports. The last time I visited, I was flexible on dates and times, so I was able to find a business class seat on the less busy route to San Jose and then drove the extra hour to San Francisco.
Sunshine and convenience are prerequisites for a contented existence in California, and both are equally welcome after the long flight. If you make an advanced reservation with most of California’s rental car companies to ensure they have enough time to meet your needs, you will be on the road in an adapted car in no time. Avis and Hertz are my go-to's, but Thrifty and Dollar offer similar services. Simply book online, then call them with your preferences, selecting from a list that typically includes push-pull hand controls, spinner knobs, transfer boards and swivel

There are plenty of hotels around the world that the royal family have frequented—but there’s something special about staying in an actual home or estate that the monarchy has vacationed at. It feels more regal; more like leaning into the royal life than checking into a hotel room.
Soon after the death of Sarah Winchester in San Jose, California, in 1922, the new owners opened her mansion as an attraction for tourists drawn to tales of the bizarre. Winchester was the heir to the gun manufacturer’s fortune, and rumors swirled around her constant home building and renovation. She constructed elaborate extra rooms (more than a hundred), stairs that led nowhere, and empty corridors that turned the house into a bewildering maze.
My paddle slips gently through calm ocean water as the kayak glides toward the mouth of Morro Bay Harbor. I approach a sandbar covered in resting cormorants, as sea otters float in nearby kelp, inky-eyed pups nestled on their mothers’ chests. On this windless morning, the marine layer paints the world in a gentle watercolor wash. In front of me, Morro Rock rises dramatically from the landscape.
It began as a lurid tale of sadism and corruption in Edinburgh’s old town. Between 1827 and 1828, William Burke and William Hare terrorized the cobblestone streets of Scotland’s capital, kidnapping and murdering 16 people for medical experimentation. This killing spree ended with a controversial court case that transfixed the nation.
You wouldn’t know it from the sea of skyscrapers hemmed in by traffic-clogged freeways. Or from the flashy Hollywood studios, the multi-million-dollar celebrity homes or the Dior parading down Rodeo Drive. But a little over 200 years ago, Los Angeles was a wilderness, just sea and mountains and big sky. Back then, what’s now considered the quintessential US city wasn’t even in America, but in Mexico.

You know that feeling when you accidentally buy the wrong house? No, me neither. Cal Hunter does, though, and it was to prove quite the most fortuitous error of the 31-year-old carpenter’s life.
