New air routes by low-fare airlines promise great deals for budget-minded travelers across the globe this year. Here are the 11 most-exciting air routes low-fare lines are launching in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

INRIX, Inc., a prominent transportation data and analytics company, has just released its 2024 Global Traffic Scorecard, which analyzed and ranked congestion and commuting patterns in nearly 1,000 cities across 37 nations around the world. The results indicate that traffic congestion has surged across major cities as workers return to offices and weekend activities increase. 

It just got cheaper to fulfill a New Year's resolution for more travel.  Frontier Airlines, a discount carrier based in Denver, recently announced the «New Year, New Savings» promotion, which provides a 100 percent discount off base fares for the airline. While the offer provides relief on airfare prices, travelers are still responsible for taxes and fees associated with their reservation.  The promotion runs through January 5, 2025, and is valid for travel through May 21, 2025. While this means it can be used for winter or spring break getaways, the promotion has several restrictions such as blackout dates and seven-day advance purchase.  Travelers can take advantage of the promotion by entering the code SAVE100 when booking to get the discounted fares.  “Don't wait to make your New Year’s resolutions come true,” Frontier shared about the promotion on their site. “Take advantage of our limited-time offers and book your flight today.”  For example, when the code is applied on a one-way flight from San Jose, CA (SJC) to Las Vegas, NV (LAS) the total one-way fare is $24, where the passenger just pays for the taxes and fees and does not pay for any base airfare charge. For flights when the code is not used, the fare total jumps to $104. JetBlue is shaking up its route network, cutting or changing a dozen less profitable flights across the world.

As the temperatures fall, so are airfare prices. Frontier Airlines is running its «Full Size Sale», which provides fares as low as $19 to destinations around the United States. Best of all, the flights can be booked five days of the week, whereas previous promotions from Frontier have been more limited in date availability.  The sale ends on October 31, 2024 at 11:59pm EST, however tickets can be purchased for travel through February 26, 2025. Houston residents will have a new option to Tokyo when budget airline Zipair launches new flights for as low as $333 one way beginning next March. Zipair, a subsidiary of Japan Airlines, will connect Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport and Tokyo’s Narita Airport four-days-a-week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from March 4, 2025, the airport announced Wednesday. The nearly 14-hour flights will be on Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners with 18 lie-flat business class seats and 272 economy seats. The under-$400 fare comes as a big savings compared to other airlines on the Houston-Tokyo route. All Nippon Airways (ANA) and United Airlines both offer daily flights with airfares starting at $595 one way for a basic, no-frills ticket next March. Prices climb quickly after that. “We look forward to welcoming new and seasoned travelers to take advantage of our fully customizable travel experience, including complimentary Wi-Fi service” Shingo Nishida, President of ZipairTokyo, said in the announcement. The promotional $333 fare is available for sale on ZIPAIR’s website through Nov. 30.

Nonstop travel options between Texas and Tokyo are about to get interesting. On Thursday, low-cost carrier ZIPAIR Tokyo announced a major new route linking Houston with the Japanese capital. 

Fall travelers can rejoice with new discounts on airfare. Frontier Airlines recently announced a fall vacation sale, with one-way fares as low as $19 to popular destinations including Chicago, Philadelphia, Orlando, and more.  Dallas has the highest number of deals in the sale, including flights to/from the city to Detroit, San Jose, Houston, Jacksonville, Miami, Portland, and more. Other popular markets in the sale include flights to Orlando from New Orleans, San Antonio, and Syracuse.  The sale also includes discounts to several international destinations that Frontier flies to, such as one-way service between Atlanta and Cancun from $85, and Denver to Puerto Vallarta from $99.  The lowest discounts at $19 are exclusively for members of Frontier's paid membership program, Discount Den. The program has an annual fee of $99 for the first year, and $59 for subsequent years, and provides access to lower cost fares as well as benefits including free flights for children.  The sale ends on September 23, 2024 at 11:59 p.m., and is valid on travel for select days through November 20, 2024. There are several restricted dates in the sale, such as discounted travel to Las Vegas is only available on Sunday through Wednesday. The sale is currently available on Frontier's site. Over the busy Labor Day weekend, at least 10,000 unionized front-desk workers, housekeepers and other employees at dozens ofhotel properties across the country walked off the job after failing to come to an agreement in contract negotiations.

About 10,000 hotel workers walked off of their jobs over the weekend, one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, due to unresolved contract negotiations. Members of the UNITE HERE union are asking for “higher wages, fair staffing and workloads, and the reversal of COVID-era cuts.” Many workers live paycheck to paycheck, and their pay does not cover the cost of living.

Thousands of hotel workers are on strike across the country, demanding better wages and workloads and a reversal of COVID-19-era cuts.

Few industries were disrupted as drastically by the Covid pandemic as the hospitality sector. Now, as travel has bounced back to prepandemic highs and Covid precautions have fallen by the wayside, thousands of hotel workers say they are still suffering from the lower wages and higher workloads that the pandemic period ushered in.

Hotel contracts with hospitality union UNITE HERE are ending this month, and if hotel workers don’t receive the better benefits and higher wages they’re asking for, an estimated 10,000+ workers could go on strike across the country in what could be the biggest hotel strike in American history.
