The ultimate neighborhood guide to Cancún

In ever-expanding Cancún, the hotel zone is the yin to downtown's yang. Spanning across a 22km (14mi) L-shaped island lined with seductive Caribbean beaches, pulsating nightclubs and high-rise resorts, the Zona Hotelera (hotel zone) is Mexico's most famous tourist playground. Conversely, on the mainland, the oft-overlooked Centro (downtown) provides the local flavor with its old-school marketplaces, buzzy cultural events and budget friendly eats. For a closer look at what makes these areas tick, here's a breakdown of the top neighborhoods.

Read Your Way Through Lima

When I was born, in 1946, Lima was home to 640,000 people. Now, as I’m about to turn 77 in the year 2023, Lima is a city of 10 million. The population has grown more than 15-fold. In some ways, you could say that I’ve survived alongside the city. I’ve gotten to know all 43 of its districts and municipalities, and I can say with true pride that I’ve suffered but also delighted in this gray, sleepy city. As Herman Melville describes it, in “Moby Dick”:

I moved from Seattle to Peru. There's been crime and political violence, but the friends I've made here make it worth it.

When I tell Americans I live in Cusco, Peru, I often get a puzzled look. When I add that it's the Inca capital you fly to on your way to visit Machu Picchu, their eyes light up. It's beautiful, and I love living here, but it's far from perfect. There's been political instability and crime. But for me, Cusco has always proved worth the downsides.

Why Your Best Cycling Or Hiking Trip Might Be An Active Cruise

Active travel, meaning biking, hiking and multi-sport vacations, have been skyrocketing in popularity since the pandemic. The major tour operators specializing in this field are reporting record traffic and bookings for 2023 and 2024, and this makes a lot of sense, as the pandemic caused a lasting spike in participation in many outdoor sports. Additionally, there are many benefits to active travel - exercise, guilt free indulgence, and seeing the world more deeply at a slower, immersive pace. But within this red-hot category, one niche in particular has been attracting more and more active travelers, both veterans and first timers, and that’s active cruises.

3 of the best sites in Peru’s Sacred Valley to see by rail

Peru's Sacred Valley has long lured intrepid travellers with tales of god-like emperors, human sacrifice and gargantuan feats of masonry. The Incas left such an indomitable mark on this part of Peru, it’s hard to believe the Empire lasted for less than a century, from 1438 to 1533. But traces of the ancient civilisation are felt everywhere, from the citadels of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, to the isolated, sky-high fortress of Machu Picchu. Countless visitors traverse the region on hiking tours, but for a journey that truly befits the grandeur and ambition of the Incas, explore the Sacred Valley by train. Here are three of the top sights along the way.
