Located in Northern California, the Dry Creek Valley has a rich history of wine making that dates back over 140 years. This viticultural region, spanning 9,000 acres, is renowned for its remarkable density of wineries. For those looking for a unique wine exploration adventure, this area offers the perfect tasting adventure. Gearing up for the region’s annual Passport to Dry Creek Valley event (from April 26 to April 28, 2024) we’re highlighting 11 must-visit wineries.
Pedroncelli Winery: Founded in 1927 by Italian immigrants Giovanni & Giulia Pedroncelli, this family-owned winery crafts vintages that reflect the spirit of their heritage. During Prohibition, the family sold grapes to home winemakers and today they are one of only two remaining wineries that outlasted that era. The winery focuses on heritage varietals like Zinfandel and Petite Sirah.
Dry Creek Vineyards: This respected winery is one of the last remaining private, family-owned wineries of Sonoma County that consistently produces 90+ point wines. Founded in 1972, it was one of the first wineries established in Dry Creek Valley after Prohibition, as well as one of the first in Sonoma County to become Certified Sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance. It’s particularly renowned for its Zinfandel wines.
Mill Creek Winery: The winery’s founders, the Kreck family, were early pioneers in the region who understood the potential of its fecund soils and Mediterranean climate as ideal conditions for grapes. They also prioritize environmental sustainability, using methods such as dry farming and organic vineyard cultivation. Mill Creek winery crafts small-lot wines from heritage varietals like Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Nalle Winery: This multi-generational vineyard began as the Henderlong family sheep farm back in the 1890s. In time, the ranch gave way to the construction of the dam and the creation of Lake Sonoma, and by 1927, they had planted old vine Zinfandel on their land along Dry Creek Road. As such, they’re known for their Zinfandel, which is handcrafted in their ‘living roof cellar,’ an above-ground cave.
A. Rafanelli Winery: Alberto & Letizia Rafanelli, Italian immigrants, first founded the winery in the early 1900’s. Their historic establishment produces wines that captivate the senses and honor the region's rich viticultural heritage. With a limited production and a reputation for quality, this estate offers an unparalleled tasting experience. Known for their Zinfandel, their new wines are released only once per year each spring.
Mauritson Wines: The Mauritson family has been growing grapes in the Dry Creek Valley since 1868. Their great-great-great grandfather S.P. Hallengren, who was a grape growing

When is the best time to visit Italy?
When winter’s chill was thawed by the blossoming of spring, our family would set off for the long drive from the Oxfordshire downs to our holiday house in Le Marche, central Italy. Cruising through the arable heartlands of Europe, my heart would skip a beat as we neared the totemic slate gradients of the Italian Alps. Snaking over the Brenner Pass, it felt like being spirited to another world: a sky-bright Narnia, as we emerged blinking-eyed into the Dolomites sun on the other side. Stopping in simple, family-run hotels for the night, the breakfasts were a joyful, modest but perfectly formed ode to the Sud Tyrol locale—the creamiest Sterzinger yogurts that we savored with crimson forest-fresh lingonberries, flower-flecked cheese (for breakfast!) draped with silky threads of marjoram honey from their farm. Today, most hip restaurants are ingredient-led, but these these mountain families have been doing it for centuries.
Florence has been a key destination on Italian itineraries since the Grand Tour days, when British and German aristocrats traveled through the peninsula to enrich their cultural baggage and gain status. While much has changed since the 17th and 18th centuries, the Tuscan capital remains a major draw, as proven by the thousands of people who reach the city every day.

Touristitaly comment on the differences in visiting Italy among the generations.
Washington is a state of dramatic differences, both physical and cultural. The east mixes vineyards with stark landscapes scarred by past glacial activity, while the west is a patchwork of drippy evergreen forests, clinging to the skirts of snowy mountain ranges punctuated by dome-shaped volcanoes.
