Glassmaking might have you thinking of the Venetian island of Murano, but there’s another place in Europe where the art has flourished. In Czechia’s Liberec region, glass products including jewelry and chandeliers have been made for centuries.
This month, the region celebrated its Crystal Valley Weekend, an annual festival dedicated to its glassmaking traditions. As part of this year’s celebrations, a new glass-themed hiking trail was unveiled.
If you want to escape the crowds in Czechia’s capital, Prague, for a few days, venture to north Bohemia to the Crystal Valley in the Liberec region. Glassmaking began here in this mountainous area around 600 years ago and internationally renowned names have since emerged, including Swarovski, Riedel and Preciosa.
Head to the small city of Liberec and you’ll find a central square lined with ornate, pastel-coloured houses and a turreted, Gothic town hall. Around 15 kilometers away in Jablonec nad Nisou is the world-renowned Museum of Glass and Jewelry. It’s home to the largest public collection of glass Christmas decorations in the world and the world’s longest necklace, measuring 220 meters and made of 9,244 beads.
For one of the oldest glassworks in the world, head to Harrachov. You can watch artisans manipulating fiery molten glass in the furnaces and blowing blobs into elegant vases and sculptures.
Strike out into the countryside and you’ll find the looming Lusatian, Giant and Jizera mountains, which hide a bounty of precious minerals essential for glassmaking. The forested hills are peppered with small villages of half-timbered houses where workshops have specialized in glass and jewelry for centuries.
As part of the Crystal Valley Weekend celebrations earlier this month, a new glass-themed hiking trail was unveiled in Brniště. The two-kilometer Glass Trail (Skleněné stezky) honors the region's ancient glass history and contemporary glassmaking achievements.
Look for a chandelier designed by famed glassmaker Bořek Šípek along the path, which illuminates a chapel. You’ll also pass the magical Glass Tree, a dazzling installation crafted by the artisans from Pačinek Glass (whose sculptures are featured in the Netflix film Glass Onion) in nearby Kunratice u Cvikova.

Napa-based Chandon just unveiled Chandon Home - a completely redesigned wine tasting destination that features reimagined tasting spaces and experiences both indoors and out. It’s big news, in large part because this is not only the winery’s 50th anniversary (they’ve been crafting bubbly in California since 1973), but also because this is the first complete renovation to the winery since they opened their doors in 1977. President of Chandon, Arnaud de Saignes explains the process, “While the official unveiling of our Chandon California Home is perfectly timed to our 50th anniversary year in Napa Valley, it took us three years to enhance the beauty of our space and renovate our Home, creating new elevated culinary and sensory experiences with our wines as the hero.”
