From Athens to New York City, wildfires around the world have brought orange skies and smog to major urban hubs this year. But the cities with the cleanest air have managed to decrease air pollution by regulating emissions, investing in public transportation, and transitioning to clean energy—making them more enjoyable, and sustainable, destinations for travelers.

For travelers without TSA PreCheck, wearing shoes that easily slide on and off makes navigating airport security checkpoints a tad more efficient. Let’s face it, we’ve all been the passenger with mere minutes to make it to the gate on time, and some footwear just isn’t meant for beating the clock (hiking boots, strappy sandals, most lace-ups). Beyond efficiency, those who have their hands full—traveling with kids comes to mind—or who face mobility challenges may also appreciate this type of travel-friendly shoe.

With my 40th birthday fast approaching and no wedding bells in sight, I needed something fabulous to look forward to.

Single’s Day, on November 11, has become an international shopping holiday and now travelers can get in on the deals. PLAY Airlines is offering 25 percent off flights throughout their route network in celebration of singles. The Iceland-based low-cost carrier operates flights from the Boston, New York, and Washington metropolitan areas to various destinations in Europe.  As an example, travelers can score a flight from Boston to Reykjavik, Iceland from $268, or Baltimore, MD to Amsterdam, Netherlands from $388.  PLAY Airlines network includes Athens, Amsterdam, Berlin, Dublin, London, Marrakech, Paris, Prague, and more. Travelers can also add a “stayover” up to ten days on each leg, at no cost.

Air Canada has revealed its summer 2025 flight schedule, which includes several new, nonstop flights from the United States to Canada.  The new routes include daily service launching on May 22 between Jacksonville, FL and Toronto, Canada. The airline will also operate daily, seasonal service between Montreal, Quebec, and Cincinnati, OH, as well as a new partial week, seasonal service between Nashville, TN and Vancouver, Canada. The seasonal services will run between May and October 2025.  “Our expanded transborder service will build upon our leading transborder network in conjunction with increased frequencies to seven key U.S.

A popular low-cost air airline is expanding globally. Southwest Airlines recently announced a partnership to offer international flights by partnering with carriers who operate international fights in Southwest markets. “Southwest is formalizing partnerships with international carriers to expand its network and connect Customers with more global destinations to generate additional demand for travel across the Southwest network,” Southwest shared in a news release. The launch of this new international flight program will take place in 2025, with Icelandair as the first partner airline, and will depart from the Baltimore, MD (BWI) airport. There, travelers can fly on Icelandair to Iceland, where they can connect to a variety of European destinations including Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Dublin, Oslo, Prague, Rome, and more. Icelandair is a discount carrier that operates international flights, and similar to Southwest, does not have a first or business class section on their aircraft.  “The partnership will unlock many exciting travel options for our customers, and our extensive network in Europe will open for Southwest customers,” Icelandair President and CEO Bogi Nils Bogason said in a statement.  “As part of our strategic focus on expanding our global partnership network, we seek out airlines known for exceptional service and connectivity.” As an example, a traveler would start their journey on Southwest from Nashville to Baltimore, and then continue on Icelandair from Baltimore to Iceland.

Train travel has been growing in popularity for the past couple of years and there’s no sign showing that this trend is going to stop any time soon. According to Eurail, the big boss of train travel in Europe, “more than 1,237,000 Interrail and Eurail Passes were sold in 2023, a 25 percent growth from 2022.” To satisfy the ever-growing demand for rail travel, new train operators are popping up and offering new exciting routes, especially crowd-pleasing overnight routes. That’s the case of rail operator European Sleeper which launched in May 2023.

The shake-up continues at Scandinavian Airlines following its official entrance into the SkyTeam alliance.
