At Duke’s Lobster & Seafood—a popular restaurant at Finest Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic—all-inclusive guests can order their lobster dishes however they please. Steamed in a lemon-butter sauce, perhaps? Or thermidor-style with mushrooms and shallots. How about grilled with a white wine and garlic sauce or succulent pieces piled on linguine? Actually, why not just try the decadent dish a different way each night because the lobster—and this may be a shellshocker—is indeed included in the all-inclusive rate.
Amid inflation and coming out of COVID, it’s become much harder for culinary travelers who stay at all-inclusives or board cruise ships to enjoy fine dining without the ping of upcharges for primo dishes like pan-fried lobster meunière.
In 2022 alone, food prices rose nearly 11 percent, according to the consumer price index (CPI). But some dishes in recent years have been impacted more than others — like lobster costs that, by some accounts, have jumped from $24 per pound pre-pandemic to $48.
And while you may find resorts that have seafood buffets on certain days and for a limited timeframe, there’s a few luxury destinations that are setting themselves apart with unfettered access to some of life’s finer delicacies. Take for instance the all-you-can-enjoy, around-the-clock bumps of caviar on Seabourn cruises or racks of lamb and aged steaks that come with the price of your stay at a dude ranch like C Lazy U in Granby, Colorado and wagyu at Brush Creek in Saratoga, Wyoming.
In fall 2021, the Excellence Collection opened Finest Punta Cana, where the brand’s Duke’s Lobster & Seafood debuted its second outpost. Duke’s is also at the Finest Playa Mujeres in Mexico.
The waterfront spot in the Caribbean hits the happy medium between lobster shack and fine dining. An open-air restaurant with swings, Duke’s puts forth dishes like coconut-crusted red snapper and ceviche during the day. For dinner, the menu switches over to offer its lobster dishes as well as crab cakes and surf and turf.
Fifteen or so dining outposts are scattered across the expansive Punta Cana property, in addition to the bars, lounges, and The Sweet Shop that serves ice cream and espresso.
Other stand-out culinary concepts at Finest Punta Cana include Surf & Turf, where main dishes come in pairs like coconut shrimp and wonton brisket served with pineapple habanero sauce and hoisin, and Shoji, which serves sushi rolls and sashimi, and a Parisian-inspired jewel box called Le Petit Plaisir.
As for the stay, upgrade to the Excellence Club, which is the adult’s-only section of the resort with upgrades like access to a swank lounge, Bvlgari toiletries, premium in-suite liquors, and a complimentary hydrotherapy circuit at the zen ONE

Sitting in the back of a well-worn pickup truck, my shoulders sore from the 65-liter backpack I’d been living out of, I struggled to keep the provisions I’d stashed for the next two days from rolling on the floor: gnarled-skinned avocados, a large perfectly ripe papaya, El Cafe de la Mancha’s paper packet of freshly ground coffee, homemade pecan and cashew granola, Chilean Malbec, and the ingredients for a very un-Mexican spaghetti bolognese.
It's one of the marvels of science that we forget about in our everyday lives but in 2024 it might be time to pay attention to just how much the sun, the moon and our planet Earth can put on a real show. It's an exciting time to become an astrotourist as it's the only chance to see a solar eclipse in the U.S. for the next 20 years.

On April 8 this year a total solar eclipse 115 miles across will pass over Mexico, the United States and Canada, and the sky will temporarily darken as if it were night-time. Given there’s no further total eclipses in the US until 2033, this is a rare and spectacular event likely to create an influx of travel to the region in the days beforehand. This will be even more unique considering its location, spanning across many of the world’s major tourism destinations.
For basic information about how, when and where to experience North America’s total solar eclipse and why you must try to get yourself to the path of totality on April 8, check my main feed .
