Coming home from a recent trip, I had the opportunity to transit through the brand-new Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, located outside the increasingly popular Mexican Caribbean destination of Tulum in the state of Quintana Roo.
The new Tulum International Airport officially opened to domestic flights from around Mexico on December 1, 2023, but only began operating international routes at the end of last month.
Situated about two-and-a-half hours south of the bustling tourism hotspot of Cancun, it is expected to offload some of the pressure from Cancun International Airport, which is Mexico’s second-busiest (after Mexico City’s airport) and has heretofore served as the primary gateway, not only to Cancun itself, but to the nearby Riviera Maya region (which includes Tulum) and other parts of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The airport is well-staffed with check-in desk agents, custodial employees, security officers and gate agents, most of whom looked like they could have used more to do. When I was there, I didn’t even have to wait to go through airport security and get my bags scanned, the place was so empty.
I saw a sign that reflected the airport’s nickname as “the airport of the jungle”, which it truly is, as the airfield is visibly surrounded by miles of pristine tropical forest. Airports aren’t exactly a place where you’re expecting to have the time of your life, but running into a staff member who clearly loves their job and interacting with the public can turn a hassle-filled travel journey into a far more palatable experience. Conversely, come across an employee who is in a sour mood can make things feel infinitely more frustrating.
Plenty of metrics can be used to rank the best airlines, from safety measures to customer satisfaction ratings and how their fleet and crew does at getting passengers to their destinations on time. But which airlines are the most comfortable for passengers? According to a new study from WalletHub, there’s a tie between two U.S. airlines: Both Delta and JetBlue earned the honors for being the most comfortable airlines.
When you’re looking for flights, you’re probably most loyal to the airline that you have status with or that has a hub in your city—most often, they’re one in the same. Or, you’re looking for the best flight deals, which should be a little bit easier to come by this spring as flight costs are down 7% year-over-year. But safety, comfort, and other factors are also top of mind when it comes to booking flights, and a new study from WalletHub, a personal finance company, took those considerations and other metrics into consideration to determine the best U.S. airlines of 2024.
Delta Air Lines announced plans to begin testing a New Distribution Capability (NDC) process with several of the carrier’s key partners later in 2024.
Let me just say at the outset that I love tourism, and I love the idea of seeing new destinations.
