Halloween Trips: Travel To These Destinations To Celebrate The Holiday In A Unique Way

Tens of millions of travelers fly across large oceans annually. It’s routine these days. Main routes, such as between New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport and Heathrow Airport in Hounslow to the west of London, see over a dozen nonstop flights a day in each direction. The massive airports that serve them have multiple terminals connected by their own rail systems to move both people and their luggage. Thousands of workers start shifts before dawn and stay on duty until the last airplane has safely departed. More than 76,000 people work at LHR as flyers know it.

For most of us living north of the border, Halloween is a one-night affair for the young and young at heart. In Mexico and other parts of Latin America, Dia de los Muertos (“The Day of the Dead”) is celebrated on Nov. 1 and 2, and in some regions on Oct. 31 and Nov. 6 as well. Its customs are for all ages, and more spiritually significant than trick-or-treating: everything from bringing offerings to the graves of the departed (often marigold flowers and the deceased’s favorite foods or beverages) to homemade altars and incense to lure the spirits of the deceased. Celebrations also honor the living. Many drop off treats like candy sugar skulls to their family and friends.

Located roughly halfway between Paris and Amsterdam, the city of Brussels is often overlooked in favor of those two European tourism heavyweights. But Brussels has much to offer in its own right, and is a terrific base from which to explore some of Belgium’s most beautiful cities.
