For most of us living north of the border, Halloween is a one-night affair for the young and young at heart. In Mexico and other parts of Latin America, Dia de los Muertos (“The Day of the Dead”) is celebrated on Nov. 1 and 2, and in some regions on Oct. 31 and Nov. 6 as well. Its customs are for all ages, and more spiritually significant than trick-or-treating: everything from bringing offerings to the graves of the departed (often marigold flowers and the deceased’s favorite foods or beverages) to homemade altars and incense to lure the spirits of the deceased. Celebrations also honor the living. Many drop off treats like candy sugar skulls to their family and friends.
Public Day of the Dead celebrations aren’t hard to find in most large American cities, especially those with significant Spanish-speaking populations. For travelers seeking a closer look at the popular holiday, there is no better excuse to plan a vacation south of the border. Here are five luxury properties in Central America and the Caribbean planning to go big this Day of the Dead season:

Amid all the recent headlines about aviation safety lapses and a troubling rise in close calls, it’s easy to forget that commercial air travel has never been safer.
It may not seem like it amid the inflated costs of living these days, but the median price of a gallon of gas in the U.S. has actually gone down since this time last year. According to AAA’s analysis, last week’s national average price at the pump fell nine cents from the week prior to hit $3.44 a gallon. That makes it 37 cents cheaper than last month and 32 cents less than it was during same week a year ago.
As someone who often writes about US presidents, first families, and White House history, I've wanted to visit a presidential library for a while.
Once the preserve of expats, the notion of Thanksgiving is increasingly embraced in the U.K. as both a gentle practice of seeing family or friends but also as a form of autumnal appreciation; an adult-orientated extension of harvest festivals that most schools still hold in Britain. While adhering to the understandable and delicious importance of turkey and cranberry sauce, top chefs also use Thanksgiving to bring British ingredients to the table. Here are some of the best places to celebrate Anglo-American relations this year
Over 112 million Americans traveled during the Christmas holiday last year, according to AAA Travel, a number that’s expected to be matched or surpassed this year. The first day of December is a popular air travel date for people who take extended, even month-long holiday vacations as airlines often offer discounted rates at that time of year. These hotels and resorts offer travelers all the bells and whistles one could desire from a vacation along with festive holiday activities.
October is one of my favorite months in New York City. Here, you get a mix of chilly fall days and unexpectedly warm temperatures, plus the leaves change into vibrant hues of orange, yellow and red. With many schools on fall break, there are plenty of tourists in town checking out that delightful Central Park foliage (and staying at the best hotels in the area) and, for me, it's one last chance to hold onto the city before it really gets cold.
Halloween has always been my favorite holiday.
Mexico is famous for its unique treatment of death – and, by extension, of life.
Next week, airline industry leaders will gather for the fourth annual Skift Aviation Forum in Fort Worth, Texas, on November 1. CEOs and leaders from American, Southwest, United, Alaska, Sun Country, JetBlue, Delta, Airbus, Boeing, and Air Lease Corporation will share their views on the future of industry with editors on stage.
When images of the world's largest cruise ship went viral this summer, social media users described Icon of the Seas with less than flattering terms. Among them are "human lasagne," a "monstrosity," and "hell on water."
Marigold-strewn altars to deceased loved ones, revelers dressed as skeletons, and colorful parades make Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) a big spectacle in Mexico and U.S. border states. The somber-meets-celebratory holiday November 1 and 2 honors the dead with a fusion of Catholic and pre-Columbian traditions. It sees locals decorating family graves at cemeteries and travelers joining public celebrations from Mexico City to California.
