If you’re like a lot of parents with teenagers, you’re acutely aware that quality time with your brood is limited. It won’t be long before your older kids graduate from high school and then leave the nest for college, a gap year, or a myriad of other adventures. With only a few windows of time left, you may be wondering how to spend this year’s spring break with your family.
With luxury hotels, chic restaurants, and a bustling art scene, more and more well-heeled wanderers are booking vacations to Los Cabos, an adventuresome playground where the desert meets the sea. And what’s not to love? Between the humid-free, warm, and sunshiny weather and the myriad of activities, the southern notch of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, where the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are linked by an energetic tourist corridor, provides the setting for a family-friendly getaway that will usurp all others.
You’ll have access to copious amounts of activities to keep your entire family engaged. Explore the Sea of Cortez on a boat tour to get an up-close look at the famous arch, El Arco, which translates to “Land’s End”. This well-known rugged rock formation provides the perfect backdrop for your family photographs. Keep your eyes open for sea lions, which are often sunbathing on rocks or swimming in the water.
Learn why Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez as “The World’s Aquarium” during a snorkeling adventure. There are many outfitters located at the Cabo San Lucas marina that can take your family out for the day to spot dozens of different types of fish.
Unique to the area are humpback whales, which can be seen from mid-November until the end of March. Earlier in the season it’s common to see mothers with their newborn calves because the pair surfaces frequently for air. You can book a whale watching tour to see them from a boat or look for them while sunbathing on the beach. It’s a good idea to pack a pair of binoculars so you can easily spot them from a distance.
Other activities include golfing on public and private courses, big game fishing, horseback riding, and visits to the heart of San Jose del Cabo where you’ll find a plethora of shopping and dining opportunities as well as a blooming art gallery scene.
When it’s still rainy or cool in the states, it’s nice to get away for clear skies and warm weather in Los Cabos. Spring and fall are great times for enjoying the warm and sunny weather south of the border, yet without all of the tourists that visit during the high season. The best weather—and whale watching—is undoubtably between December and March, however, this is also when most people visit, and you can expect hotel, dining, and activity prices to increase. No matter when you choose

Bright and early on a Saturday morning last March, I boarded a flight southbound to Florida with hundreds of other college students.
We hop from a small fishing boat onto an even smaller panga, as we’re about to enter Mexico’s Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, located along the East Cape of the Baja California Peninsula between Cabo San Lucas to the south and La Paz to the north. I’m here with my two teenage daughters, and they are about go snorkeling for their first time. They are excited and a bit nervous. “Will there be sharks?” they inquire for a third or fourth time. “Definitely not,” our guide responds with a smile. Which comes across as comforting if not convincing.

This spring break, travelers may want to pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and lots of patience. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently shared guidance that they predict a six percent increase in passenger screenings for this spring break season, versus the same time in 2023. If those estimates hold true, this would be one of the busiest spring break ever. “TSA screened a record number of passengers in 2023, and we expect that trend to continue this year,” the TSA’s Administrator David Pekoske said in a news release. For travelers navigating airports, the TSA says the busiest travel days will be between March 7 and March 25.
Miami Beach has long been a primary destination for college students on Spring Break. Each March, rowdy crowds descend upon the beach destination to make it their playground for a week, perhaps forgetting that not everyone there is on vacation.
