More than 450 people may lose their lives in preventable traffic crashes over the upcoming holiday weekend, according to new analysis from the National Safety Council.
“Labor Day weekend is a time to step back from our busy lives, relax and enjoy being with our loved ones,” Mark Chung, the nonprofit advocacy group’s executive vice president of roadway practice, said in a statement. “But that can too easily be stripped away.”
“Preventable roadway crashes are still at exceedingly high levels, and every fatality statistic represents a lost family member, friend, loved one, colleague and community member,” Chung said. “As a country, we must work together to collectively change behaviors and invest in infrastructure that promotes safe travel to save lives."
Every day, about 37 people in the United States die in drunk driving crashes — that's one person every 39 minutes. It’s “a serious safety epidemic in our country,” according to data released earlier this month from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA, in conjunction with its annual national Labor Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” high-visibility enforcement campaign to combat alcohol and drug impaired driving.
Impaired driving is on the rise, and the Labor Day period is particularly deadly, the federal agency said.
“Safety is a choice, and every road user must practice safe behavior each time they venture out,” added Chung, of the National Safety Council. “For example, if you’re driving, slow down, look out for other road users including pedestrians and bicyclists, drive free of distraction and impairment, and wear a seat belt. Taking these actions can save a life.”
The safety group offered a series of safety tips:
Cathy Chase, president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, said it was critical for the nation’s leaders to advance the use of safety technology that is known to be effective in saving lives, to prevent Labor Day weekend travel tragedies, “one of the deadliest times of year on the nation’s roadways” and at all times.
The federal government can do this, she said in a statement, by issuing minimum performance standards for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), like automatic emergency braking (AEB) and other technologies, and upgrading and improving roadway infrastructures, including narrowing roads, creating roundabouts, and constructing accessible sidewalks and protected bike lanes.
Passing legislation for these life saving technologies will help make every road user safe “whether they are working in a roadside construction zone, responding to an emergency, driving for leisure and recreation, commuting to work or school, or walking, rolling or bicycling,” Chase added.
