Though I’ve visited Portland, Oregon, so many times I’ve lost count, I won’t soon be forgetting my last trip thanks to a new downtown hotel.
After years of planning and plenty of anticipation, The Ritz-Carlton, Portland at long last opened its doors on October 31, 2023. In short? It’s a stunner. The building caught my eyes even before I pulled up: with 35 stories and a shimmering glass facade, it towers over its neighbors and shines bright against the city skyline.
The wow factor continued from there. Forest Hall, the property’s imaginative take on the traditional lobby, features high ceilings, strategically-placed lighting, and woody accents galore—from the spindly branches that appeared to float to the ceiling-to-floor drapes resembling tree trunks—to reflect the Pacific Northwest’s stirring natural beauty. Just as impressive is the knowledgable but laid-back staff, which feels very in line with Portland: check-in was hassle-free, and one of the concierges Mei Mei—consider her the ultimate resource when it comes to the local restaurant scene—quickly felt like a long-lost sister. We bonded over our love of food in the elevator up to my room.
If you’re someone who factors in space when booking a hotel, you’ll be pleased as punch since even the entry-level rooms clock in at a very generous 500 square feet—making The Ritz’s accommodations the most spacious in Portland. (Equally nice is having two sinks in every room category.) The natural design ethos from the ground floor flows over to the 207 guestrooms and 44 suites with abstract headboards reminiscent of the Willamette River and wood art depicting Lewis and Clark’s journals.
There are subtle nods to Portland, too. The residential-feeling Executive Suites—they’re tucked into the corners of each floor, and come with a massive light-filled living room, 1.5 bathrooms, and a California king bed—sport handsome trunk wet bars adorned with a baby cannabis plant print. It’s a detail that could be easily overlooked, which makes discovering it feel even more fun. Though the spa wasn’t opened yet during my visit, the fitness center is definitely a notch above the rest with pristine 4,000 square feet of in-demand equipment (imagine Peloton bikes, 100-pound dumbbells, and Technogym treadmills) and ceiling-to-floor windows.
Akin to a hotel-within-a-hotel, the 20th-floor club lounge is a stylish space with beverages (coffee, sodas, wine) and multiple food presentations—one evening, I tucked into Asian canapes including chicken dumplings and vegetable spring rolls before heading to a pal’s bar—throughout the day, speedy wifi, and beyond-friendly staff who go out of their way to ensure every aspect of your stay is up to par. But beyond stellar views and curated eats,
