High-speed rail company Brightline is starting its field investigation work in southern California to prepare for a rail corridor connecting the state with Las Vegas.
The Brightline West project is kicking off with work along I-15 from Jan. 23 to Jan. 26, the company announced Tuesday. This is the next stage of field work, which began in Nevada earlier this month.
“The field work will advance final stages of design in preparation for a groundbreaking,” Brightline West wrote in a statement.
When complete, the company will operate a 218-mile all-electric rail service connecting Sin City with the Los Angeles area with speeds up to 200 mph. The project is expected to take about four years.
This initial field investigation work includes geotechnical borings and samplings, utility potholing, and land surveying. The work will take place mostly during the day with some nighttime hours “to minimize disruption to traffic.”
The work will take place along the following corridors:
The high-speed rail project is part of a larger investment from the Department of Transportation (DOT), which has allocated $8.2 billion in funding for several key rail projects across the country. Beyond the West Coast, the DOT is funding a new high-speed service connecting Dallas and Houston, a new route connecting Fort Collins and Pueblo in Colorado, and more.
For its part, Brightline has continued to expand its presence in Florida, opening up a new route between Miami and Orlando late last year. Brightline first launched in 2018 with service between West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami, and has since expanded, adding service to Aventura, Boca Raton, and its newest Orlando station.
The company offers multi-use passes like the All-Station Shared Pass, which starts at $1,199 and includes access to each of Brightline’s stations, and a SoFlo Solo Pass, which includes 40 rides to South Florida stations starting at just $399.
