No holiday season is complete without a magical performance of Tchaikovsky's classic ballet, The Nutcracker. The Joffrey Ballet in Chicago along with the Lyric Opera Orchestra, bring this timeless tale to life. This re-imagined classic is set in Chicago's World's Fair in 1893. It’s choreographed by two-time Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon. The performance highlights rich cultural heritage, elaborate costumes, and enchanting music. Wheeldon's American tale shows an immigrant family during the Chicago World's Fair in 1893, and opens as young Marie and her mother, a sculptress creating the Fair's iconic Statue of the Republic, host a festive Christmas Eve celebration. After a surprise visit from the creator of the Fair, the mysterious Great Impresario, Marie embarks on a whirlwind adventure with the Nutcracker Prince through a dreamlike World's Fair.
After seeing the Nutcracker, head to The Florian, a supper club and cocktail bar located on the third floor of the Lyric Opera. The space was renovated by Toasted Hospitality, a local family owned restaurant group, in 2019. The atmosphere is modern, yet timeless for guests seeing the Nutcracker or other shows at the Lyric Opera. The kitchen is led by Chef Amanda McLemore, with a goal taking classic comfort dishes and viewing it through the lens of sustainability and seasonality. The menu changes with not only the seasons but the performances. The Florian is open for matinees, pre-show dinner and post show cocktails for all Lyric Opera and Joffrey Ballet performances. Favorite dishes include seabass, crusted prime rib and chicken piccata. Dessert selections include apple cheesecake, lemon tart and dark chocolate torte. There’s an extensive drink menu full of cocktails, wine by the glass and a variety of beer.
