For fans of Christmas festivities, London has some of the best activities and events in the world. The iconic landmarks and streets are lit up with dazzling displays, there’s Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, traditional Christmas markets offering unique gifts and seasonal treats and ice skating at beautiful venues like historic Somerset House. Here are a few suggestions if you’re visiting London this month.
What better way to see the city’s buildings, shop windows and streets adorned in glittering lights and decorations than on an open-top bus, led by an expert guide. You need to bundle up but it’s just about warm enough to do this in December. There are a variety of tour companies offering this and most will cruise by London’s famous landmarks and streets like Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Regent Street, The Strand, the London Eye and Tower Bridge. The Christmas Lights London by Night has various tours, starting at either the London Eye, Green Park or Victoria station.
Or, for a budget option, you can see the major West End Christmas lights (Oxford Street's glowing stars and Regent Street's ever-popular angels) aboard the 139 double-decker bus towards Waterloo, from the stop outside Selfridges department store on Oxford Street.
Wigmore Hall, one of the best concert halls in London to enjoy classical music, has a jam-packed schedule for the holiday season. A highlight will be on 22 December (tickets from £18), when choral ensemble Siglo de Oro combine with instrumentalists from the Spinacino Consort to present a lively combination of 17th-century ballads, dances and carols.
Somerset House’s spectacular courtyard will be transformed this year into a glorious festive destination with a uniquely Swiss winter vibe courtesy of Switzerland Tourism. From skating lessons with Skate School to DJs on the rink-side decks, there's something for everyone. Enjoy a glass of rosé in Skate Lounge by Whispering Angel. Skate until 14 January 2024 (Adults from £11 Children from £8).
European Best Destinations has chosen London this year as the second best city for “most beautiful Christmas Trees” (Craiova, Romania is number one). Start with the spectacular tree at Trafalgar Square. Every year since 1947, Norway has gifted Londoners with a classic Norwegian spruce to thank Britain for its support of Norway during the Second World War.
With a nod to The British Library next door, the St Pancras tree is an impressive tower of more than 3,800 books. In partnership with Hatchards, the UK’s oldest bookshop, St Pancras station has created a 39 foot-tall tree that features a winding staircase, wrapping around 270 book shelves. At its base, visitors can relax in one of eight cubby holes and listen to a five-minute excerpt
