Nowhere in London has a more refined glow at Christmas than Mayfair. Between Piccadilly and Oxford Street and still largely owned by Grosvenor Estate which belongs to the Duke of Westminster, it was largely rural - and used as pasturelands - until the late 17th century. Today, its streets and squares are home to some of the city’s oldest, and most famous hotels and shops.
If the area has a high street, it’s Mount Street, but you’ll find branches of Danish jeweler Georg Jensen, galleries, restaurants that include Wilton’s and Scott’s. London’s most fashionable Catholic church, the Immaculate Conception, familiarly known as Farm Street - another reference to Mayfair’s rural past - is on hand to provide spiritual sustenance, including a carol service on December 12.
Mayfair still has a fine collection of Victorian pubs. None are grander - or as arty - as The Audley. Now owned by Artfarm, the holding group for the Hauser & Wirth gallery group but there’s a full bar snack menu of scotch eggs, half pints of prawn and even cheesy chips and as December continues, convivial Christmas gatherings. Head to Shepherd’s Market, site of London’s original - and raucous - May Fair and you’ll find a fine selection of pubs in its tiny streets; including Ye Grapes in a prime corner spot and the posher Market Tavern. The Footman, on the corner of Hays Mews, feels like a proper local, albeit a nice one, because people still live in this very exclusive corner of London (there’s even a state primary school, St George’s Hanover Square).
For life’s essentials, there’s Selfridges on Oxford Street. Certainly London’s most innovative department store, possibly even Europe’s. This year, it is embracing London’s love of spectacle with windows that celebrate theater and - until November 29, its lounge was taken over by the Kit Kat Club, the offshoot of the Playhouse’s award-winning production of Cabaret.
Until December 14, Clementine’s is offering locals and visitors a distinctly Mayfair way to celebrate. Housed in Shapero Rare Books on New Bond Street. Clementine’s is a collaboration between floral artist Amie Bone and caterers AP&Co, offering guests wreath-making class, afternoon tea or evening meals, surrounded by Shapero’s renowned book collection.
When it comes to conceptual hotel Christmas trees, Claridge’s has no peer. This year Faye McLeod, the creative visual director at Louis Vuitton was commissioned to create its Christmas tree. The hotel in Brook Street has had a long connection with Louis Vuitton, through Empress Eugenie of France who took up residence in the 1850s. Two large open Malles Vestiaire are set on top of each other at the height of 5.2 meters, covered in vintage, oversized Claridge’s travel stickers of

Think of a Wes Anderson film and the muted greys and browns of a rain-soaked day in London are not the first things that spring to mind. But the UK capital is about to host the first European exhibition of photographs inspired by the vibrant aesthetic of the American film director.
Winter can be a tricky time if you’ve got kids of any age: darker, shorter days and inclement weather mean they inevitably end up stuck inside, with everyone getting bored, cross and arguing about screen time. Why not banish those winter blues with a change of scene and whisk them away on an impromptu weekend trip? After all, spontaneity is now a major travel trend – recent research from Hilton* found that only 22% of UK travellers consider themselves meticulous planners.
