Solo traveling isn’t exactly a new concept. In fact, according to results from the Visa Global Travel Intentions Study, an estimated 24 percent of those who travel tend to jet off on solo vacations instead of planning trips with friends or family. Solo traveling is an excellent way to get to know yourself, to focus on problem-solving, and of course to see the world without waiting on anyone else or making compromises.
Traveling or living abroad alone comes with a lot of perks—but solo travelers need to be aware of a whole different set of priorities and safety precautions in order to ensure the best experience possible and there are certain cities that lead the pack. A new study from Online Gaming Groups recently dug into what makes a city stand out for singles and in turn, found the top destinations around the world that cater to solo travelers.
The study looked at things like rent, cost of living, average salary and safety rates in various cities around the world to identify the ten best destinations for single people. The study calculated a combined score for each city to make a comprehensive ranking. It’s also worth noting that the study took into account the percentage of existing single people that make up each city’s population.
Tokyo led the ranking of the best cities for single people with a composite score of 169. The city is considered an attractive destination for single travelers and ranked highly in metrics like safety, average salary, rent, and overall cost of living. It’s worth noting that Japan was also rated ‘Best Country in the World’ to visit last year, according to Conde Nast Traveler readers in its annual Readers’ Choice Awards.
Doha, Qatar, ranked second on the list with a composite score of 165. It ranked slightly higher than Tokyo for the average salary and safety rating. However, the cost of rent and the percentage of single people in the vicinity were much lower than in Tokyo.
The third country on the list was Beijing with a composite score of 159. It boasts low rent and the lowest cost of living on the list. Abu Dhabi, Osaka, and Bucharest all ranked fourth on the list with a score of 156. Abu Dhabi was the safest city on the list while Osaka had the lowest rent cost (at just $446/month per person). Bucharest was also very budget-friendly (especially for a European country).
Madrid, Warsaw, and Munich tied for fifth place —- the cities stood out for high salaries and low cost of living and rent. Helsinki followed in sixth place thanks to its high percentage of singles while Dubai ranked seventh place for its safe environment and high tax-free salaries (despite its high cost of living and rent).
