Born in California, Alex Brightman is a two-time Tony nominee and writer living in New York City. He loves watching baseball and basketball when he's not on stage. Right now you can see him as Richard Dreyfuss in “The Shark is Broken” on Broadway.
In the latest column on my series, Alex shares what he loves most about New York.
WHERE I LIVE IN NYC
Pass. :)
FAVORITE NEIGHBORHOOD IN NYC
Not sure if this is a neighborhood because it encompasses a few neighborhoods... Central Park. I love it so much. I could walk there every single day and never get bored.
FAVORITE SPOTS IN THE THEATRE DISTRICT
A great new burger joint called Lovely's just opened up on 45th and 9th Ave. I had a patty melt and fries that were outstanding. My family goes to the Glass House Tavern for pre-show drinks and snacks. I also love Vida Verde...great chips and guac.
BEST PLACE FOR PRE OR POST THEATRE MEAL
This isn't a new answer for me by any stretch. I love The Mermaid Inn. And lucky for all of you, there is a brand new Mermaid Oyster Bar (same owners) just east of Times Square in the Theatre District. The best dishes are the Lobster Knuckles, the Fish Tacos, and as many oysters as you can fit into your stomach. I recommend the East Coast oysters especially.
BEST WATERING HOLE
Pass. I don't drink. :)
INSIDER TIPS FOR ENJOYING A BROADWAY SHOW
Turn your phones all the way off. If it's silenced, it's still going to nag at your brain to check it. Just leave it off. You can do it. I believe in you. Also, if you want to go to the theatre alone, do it. Sometimes it's better to just enjoy a theatre experience for yourself. No distractions. No need to turn to a friend. Just for you.
NEW YORK CITY THEATER I LOVE TO GO TO AND WHY
I love the Circle in the Square. It's such a fun quirky theatre. It's versatile. And it's intimate in a million ways. And on a personal note, it's where I made my Broadway debut in a show called Glory Days that opened and closed on the same night.
OTHER BWAY SHOWS ON MY RADAR
Can't wait to see How to Dance in Ohio. I also can't wait to see Water for Elephants.
INSIDER NEW YORK GEMS
Here's a weird one. If you find yourself in Times Square with an hour to kill and you just don't want to sightsee, there's a Dave & Busters on 42nd between Broadway and 8th Avenue. I frequent it more than I should. It's a nice escape from the city if you're into that sort of thing. And I know this feels vague, but ANY jazz club in the West or East Village. I'm leaving this vague so you can go there yourself and choose your spot.
FAVORITE THEATRES AROUND THE WORLD
I haven't gone to too many places internationally, but I would say that any theatre in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is a delight. Small to medium to large.

I've lived in New York for more than a decade, and during a recent visit to Japan, I saw three major differences in how public spaces are utilized to the best of their potential in Tokyo.
New York is one of 23 states where recreational marijuana is now legal. Travelers aged 21 and older may possess up to three ounces of cannabis (24 grams of concentrated cannabis) and consumption is permitted in most public spaces where smoking and vaping are allowed. Limitations still apply and you might feel more comfortable saving your dispensary haul for the end of the day – nodding off on the subway isn’t going to do you any favors. Get a bite of the Big Apple high life and revel in some post-hike hashish at these cannabis-friendly Airbnbs in New York State.
As a flock of noisy jet skiers circle the Statue of Liberty on a warm October evening, Matthew Rhys looks out at the horizon. “There’s a Welsh word, hiraeth, which is loosely translated to ‘a longing for home,’" he says. “But it's something slightly more than that. It's a longing for something that can never be again.”
