U.S. hotel operators are expected to post a rise in first-quarter profit even as they pour in money to lure travelers to make bookings directly through their websites, instead of turning to travel agencies.

Consumers continue to splurge on air tickets. But travel patterns are shifting so often, partly due to work-life changes wrought by the pandemic, that airlines must constantly adapt on booking plane seats and remain cautious in forecasting demand and revenue.

Hurricane Hilary is now a Category 1 hurricane currently on track to hit Southern California on Sunday. Hilary is expected to hit California as a tropical storm and could cause flooding and other damage in much of the Southwestern United States. If that happens, it will be the first tropical storm to hit California since 1939.

The storm, once known as Hurricane Hilary, weakened to a post-tropical cyclone this morning, but it is currently making quite a mess of Nevada and Southern California. California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for much of Southern California.
