A year after a wildfire ripped through Maui and devastated parts of Lahaina Town, tourism has yet to recover — even though right now might be a great time to visit, according to the general manager of the resort where season one of HBO's "The White Lotus" was filmed.

Maui still faces an uphill battle for a full tourism recovery one year after one of the deadliest wildfires in Hawaii’s history.

Tourists have remained unsure whether Maui is ready to welcome them after its painful recovery from last August’s wildfires. So Hawaii’s tourism agency launched a marketing campaign last week to reassure them that the entire island is open for business.

Tourism is slowly coming back to Maui as the Hawaiian government starts to lift travel restrictions to the western region, two months after devastating wildfires that left nearly 100 dead and displaced thousands of people.

Maui’s tourism recovery has been moving at a sluggish pace since the wildfires devastated the island’s western region in early August. One factor: Tourists have been slow to return out of sensitivity to locals.

The healing from the tragedy in Maui will take time and residents are debating whether to encourage more tourism. Many officials and those in the industry are stressing that tourists are still welcome in parts of Maui and the rest of Hawaii and that the economic recovery is critical.
