Tourists will struggle to visit Machu Picchu in the near-term because protestors have for days blocked access — with no end in sight. Peru’s government on Tuesday suspended talks with protesters.

Peru’s post-pandemic recovery will take longer than expected because of the violent political protests that started in December. As the protests continue, the country’s competitiveness as a tourist destination is at risk if the political situation isn’t resolved and images of unrest and chaos stay in the international spotlight.

Tour operators selling the world-famous Machu Picchu in Peru are designing a better future for adventure trekking.

In one of South America’s most enigmatic corners, ancient crocodiles, anthropomorphic birds, and two-headed dieties keep court in misty forests. Archeologists have found some 600 of these volcanic rock statues buried in a string of mounds near the town of San Agustín in southern Colombia. Once unearthed, these myserious artworks, carved between the first and eighth centuries A.D., can rise as high as 14 feet.
