Southwest’s newest aircraft will feature a fresh new appearance next year.
Starting in 2025, Southwest will take delivery of new Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX-8 airplanes, both of which will showcase the brand-new seat design. Reminiscent of Southwest’s classic blue interior and cushy seats, the new cabin will instead feature a muted tone of blue and slimmer seats.
Southwest’s all 737 fleet is arranged in a 3-3 configuration, and this new cabin design is no exception. However, the new seats will come with an adjustable headrest and larger under-seat space. In addition, every passenger will have their own USB-A and USB-C outlets, as well as access to larger overhead bins for carry-on bags.
There won’t be any seatback screens, but the new seats will come with personal device holders that can fit a large device or tablet. The airline provides free entertainment via its inflight entertainment portal, which features movies, TV shows, and free text messaging.
«Southwest flies above our competition with industry-leading flexibility and our legendary Hospitality,» Tony Roach, senior vice president and chief customer officer at Southwest Airlines, said in a statement. «Our redesigned cabin interior significantly enhances our inflight Customer experience and will complement the amazing service that our Crews provide.»
While Southwest only plans on debuting the aircraft interiors on its new planes, the airline has made major strides in elevating many of its inflight amenities. Southwest is equipping its existing 737 MAX-8 and 737-800 aircraft with USB-A and USB-C power ports, “a process that is anticipated to be completed over the next several years,” according to the carrier.
At the end of last year, Southwest completed its major upgrade of faster Wi-Fi across its fleet, which costs $8 per flight segment. Other improvements include complimentary same-day standby for all passengers and digital bag tracking as the airline maintains its value proposition of two free checked bags.

Many astronomy events will grace the sky this year, but the total solar eclipse is hands down the highlight for those even marginally interested in celestial happenings. On April 8, 2024, the total solar eclipse will cross North America, and many are trying to get in on the action (though the options for where to stay along the path of totality is already limited).
If it seems like everyone and their mother is trying to use points and miles to go to Japan these days, you’re not wrong. But can you really blame them? Between the people, the history, the culture, the architecture, the nightlife, the shopping, and of course, the food, Japan is an absolute dream of a destination for so many, including honeymooners planning their once-in-a-lifetime vacations.

Fifteen-hour flights are becoming the norm these days now that aviation engineers have designed aircraft that can easily make those long-haul trips. Currently the longest journey is from New York City to Singapore (18.5 hours) but Qantas Airlines is set to debut a new offering next year—from Sydney to London, and Sydney to New York—flights that will come in at 20 hours. Most Qantas international flights are long-haul by definition (given Australia’s geographic situation) but their mastery of the business class experience makes them a pleasure to fly rather than an endurance test. During a recent 15 hour and 45 minute flight from Melbourne to Dallas I had the opportunity to inspect their business class offering on their 787-9 Dreamliner. Overall, the quality of the experience neutralizes the slog of 15+ hours with fine dining, great wines, comfortable seats and a great cabin crew.
