In a city renowned for its historic buildings, making your mark as an independent hotel requires a Herculean effort. As such, One Aldwych, London merits high praise.
The storied history of the One Aldwych property dates back to 1905 when The Morning Post, a London newspaper, commissioned a new building. Thanks to innovative architecture and steel frame construction, the building was completed in only two years and quickly became known for its blend of Edwardian grandeur and splendid Parisian elegance. In 1907, the Morning Post moved into the building. Interestingly, the printing presses were installed in the basement where they remained for the next 20 years. The hotel’s swimming pool sits there today.
After The Morning Post changed hands, the Inveresk Paper Company acquired the building, which later became a hub for renowned illustrated magazines like Illustrated London News and The Tatler. Over time, significant modifications were undertaken, including the addition of two floors, removal of the original dome and reconfiguration of the interior layout. During this period, the building served as the premises for various entities such as the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Works, Prudential Assurance Company, Lloyds Bank and the popular London Brasserie known as the Aldwych Brasserie.
Subsequently, the building was purchased by private independent owners who embarked on transforming it into the One Aldwych Hotel, which officially opened its doors in 1998. In 2019, One Aldwych underwent a comprehensive renovation, with suites and bedrooms receiving a makeover by acclaimed designer Robert Angell, who proceeded to give the hotel an upscale residential feel, timelessly chic and filled with natural daylight in order to elevate the mood. London design company Fabled Studio gave Indigo, its signature restaurant, a bright, airy feel and reaffirmed The Lobby Bar as a true destination bar with interiors evoking the building’s Art Nouveau and Parisian touches, as well as its former life as the headquarters of the Morning Post newspaper. Indigo is a neighborhood jewel famed for flavor. Overseen by Head Chef Dominic Teague, Indigo’s menu exemplifies his penchant for British ingredients.
Janine Marshall, One Aldwych General Manager, says,"Stepping into One Aldwych is to step into a moment in history, dressed up in style. Built in 1905 as the home of the Morning Post newspaper, we like to think it still inspires spirited conversation just as it did all those years ago."
One Aldwych sits right in the heart of Covent Garden, offering guests quick access to attractions like West End theaters and the Royal Opera House. The Market Building & Piazza is the centerpiece of this world-famous destination and the home of

These oft-bypassed towns have all been, at some period in history, influential if not necessarily powerful; wealth-creating though hardly opulent; and vital to the nation’s wealth and security while never fully rewarded for it. Communications and trade once gave some urban centres the edge over others. Churches and marketplaces were social magnets. Today a brand-name art gallery, celebrity residents, or media chatter are most likely to generate appeal, however specious. What if estate agents sold houses using poetry, memories, polyglotism, ruins and rust?
