Club Med announced a brand new resort concept on October 24, 2023—an all-inclusive surf and safari resort on South Africa’s Indian Ocean coast that will open in 2026.
The new resort, the brand’s first in South Africa, is called Club Med Tinley. Planned to open in 2026, the surfing-focused part of the resort is beachside on a 79-acre property on what’s known as South Africa’s Dolphin Coast. The location is a 30-minute drive from the region’s main airport, King Shaka International, and 45 minutes from the province’s capital, Durban.
A further three-hour drive (or 40-minute flight) north will be Club Med’s 80-room safari lodge. It’s on a 21,307-acre game reserve complete with Africa’s big five—African buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhinoceros—as well as a wealth of other wildlife. Off the beach resort, on the other hand, it will be possible to spot dolphins year round and whales between June and December.
The entire resort will be categorized as four stars (Club Med calls these 4-Trident resorts), but it will also include five-star (Exclusive Collection, in Club Med speak) space.
Naturally at such an ideal surf location, Club Med Tinley will have a surfing school, the first for the brand. Other planned activities announced so far include a yoga school, standup paddleboarding, kayaking, cycling, beach volleyball and beach rugby as well as excursions for deep-sea fishing and whale and dolphin watching. The resort’s kids’ club will have separate programming for under 18s, even those as young as four months. More details will come as work on the properties progresses.
Founded in 1950, Club Med operates almost 70 resorts in 40 countries in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, North and South America. Its all-inclusive resorts are known for their hassle-free vacations, excellent food featuring local ingredients and cuisine, a wide range of sports and activities, and their staff’s friendly approach to hospitality. Club Med is improving all its properties worldwide in its goal to be a leader in high-end, all-inclusive vacations. All its remaining 3-Trident resorts will become 4-Trident properties, making all the brand’s offerings—from ski and beach resorts to yachts—either four- or five-star experiences.
South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province is on the country’s northeast coast between Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Mozambique, and Lesotho. The capital, Durban, is South Africa’s third largest city—even the city itself is known for its excellent beaches with warm Indian Ocean waves.
KwaZulu-Natal’s Dolphin Coast is so named because of the bottlenose dolphins that live in its warm waters year round. Between May and July is a particularly spectacular time to visit the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal because of

I've spent most of my adult life in South Africa, and one thing I never tire of is safari trips. I've been on more than 30 safaris, ranging from trips with no-frills accommodations to ones with all-inclusive private lodges.
Misguided stereotypes often define inbound tourism to South Africa. Think: “exotic” safaris with , , or themes — and poverty voyeurism.
