Sweden might be famous for its meatballs—but that doesn’t mean that vegetarian and vegan travelers have to miss out on the decadent dish. The Nordic country is one of the worldwide leaders in sustainability which means finding plant-based alternatives is extremely easy (and delicious), especially in Stockholm.
If you’re planning a trip to the capital of Sweden and hoping to indulge in a classic köttbullar meal, we’ve got you covered. Here are some of the very best places to check out—from the hottest spot in town to the must-hit notorious furniture store cafeteria (we had to).
Meatballs for the People is widely considered the best spot for meatballs in Stockholm, full stop. The popular restaurant offers a huge variety of different options for meat- and plant-based eaters alike and also has a great selection of house wines (including a great sparkling wine). Keep in mind that this restaurant is quite small and cozy which can sometimes result in a pretty long line and can be up to half an hour wait time; arrive hungry but not hangry.
Stockholm can be pretty pricey these days—but if you’re watching your vacation budget you can still eat really well at IKEA. The well-loved department store is akin to FamilyMart and 7-Eleven in Japan or the Costco food court in the US in that you can find great food for great prices—and that includes a delicious plant-based meatball meal. The IKEA City location in the city center has a very pretty dining area and even has wine and beer available for purchase.
Verte is kind of a cross between cool brasserie and cozy home kitchen. The plant-based restaurant offers a huge variety of vegetable dishes that range from health-focused bowls and salads to classic Swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes and lingonberries. It also has a sidewalk terrace in the warmer months which is perfect for people watching.
Hermans is one of those rare restaurants that has great tasting food, great views, and decent prices to boot. The venue is entirely plant-based and offers a huge selection of Swedish dishes alongside its meatballs (including really good kanelbulle). It also overlooks the entire inlet to Stockholm and has cozy park seating come summertime where visitors can take advantage of the panoramic views in a serene setting.
Organico prides itself on serving not only plant-based but also organic and gluten-free options as well. The cozy Södermalm restaurant also doubles as a cafe with plenty of nooks and crannies ripe for curling up with a book and enjoying a turmeric latte.

But little did I know that those seemingly endless miles would leave an indelible imprint, filled with laughter, bonding, and unforgettable memories, shaping me into the avid traveler I am today.
