When you find yourself in an exquisite locale that most people have yet to visit, you’re tempted to keep it to yourself. But when Four Seasons recognizes that locale for the gem it is? Well, now you just want to shout it from the rooftops.
On a recent visit to Four Seasons Los Cabos, opened in 2019, my love affair with the East Cape of Baja California Sur blossomed. I had previously immersed myself in one of my favorite places in the world, Loreto, and now I was experiencing a different sort of East Cape vacation – one in the lap of luxury where the Four Season’s seamless service, warmth, and kindness are the order of the day, every day.
The East Cape is a peaceful respite from the Cabo crowds. It’s a 45-minute drive from San Jose del Cabo International Airport to the resort community of Costa Palmas. You’ll turn down a dirt road bordered by cardon cacti and a Robert Trent 18-hole golf course that blends beautifully into the natural landscape, then arrive at an open-air reception area and the warmest of welcomes from the Four Seasons team.
The property reflects its tropical desert surroundings with understated elegance. Landscape workers quietly rake sand, housekeepers enter and exit discreetly and leave room amenities like truffles and fruit plates, and service is such that you’re made to feel like the most important guest they’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing.
Views are stunning. Jacque Cousteau’s declaration that these waters are the aquarium of the world is accurate – you’ll spot dolphins and the occasional whale tail with your in-room binoculars, whetting your appetite for water excursions. The Sierra de la Laguna Mountain range provides a gorgeous backdrop to the Sea of Cortez, and the wide, swimmable beach (somewhat rare in this neck of the woods) is a glorious bonus.
As a guest at the Four Seasons Los Cabos, you’ll have easy access to private excursions, all arranged through your concierge. You’ll be well taken care of on a 52-foot catamaran operated by Aventura. Crew members will offer you a full-service bar, and the on-board chef will prepare delectable food as you search for whales or gasp at a circle of sea lions floating on their backs, fins poking up from the waves. Just catch the water taxi at the Four Seasons private marine – it will take you directly to your yacht.
From the marina, you can hop on a motorboat for a day of snorkeling or diving, a Four Seasons experience that should not be missed. Cabo Pulmo National Park is an awe-inducing protected area for marine life– you’ll see whales, sea lions, turtles, manta rays, jumping fish, clownfish, moray eels, grouper, and walls of jackfish layered from sea floor to surface, undulating in the surf. I’ve been to all seven continents and to some of the most unique spots on earth yet the one place I return to time after time is Miraval. Although they now have wellness destinations in the Berkshires and Austin, Texas (neither of which I’ve visited yet), as well, the original Miraval in Tucson, Arizona will always feel like home to me and my husband.

Once upon a time, people used to get dressed up for planes. Luckily, that time is no more. While gentlemen used to dress accordingly for business travel in their tailored finery, that trend has long since waned. If you’re embarking on a long journey—whether it’s by air, road, or rail—cultural norms have literally and figuratively loosened up.
