Let’s face it: most restaurants located in Times Square are usually tourist traps with overpriced, mediocre food, especially “red sauce” Italian joints. Diehard New Yorkers— me among them—typically avoid dining in the area at all costs and gravitate to other hip local spots instead.
Tony’s Di Napoli changed my perception.
Located in the epicenter of the Theater District in Midtown Manhattan (with another location on the Upper East Side) in the historic space that once housed the iconic Rosoff's Restaurant on West 43rd Street, Tony’s Di Napoli offers surprisingly high quality and delicious Italian cuisine, family-style dining, and unstuffy but spot-on service that sets an example of what true hospitality is all about.
The space is alive with buzz and energy from the minute you enter.
Massive tables of large parties of six, eight and ten are packed in the main dining room, and everyone is laughing and having a great time. Right away, you want to join the party, and Tony’s is a place where everyone is invited in on the fun.
Embracing the Broadway spirit of the neighborhood, Tony’s walls are covered with over 60 original oil-painted caricatures of Broadway stars — from Brooke Shields to Hugh Jackman, creating what is now one of Broadway's most incredible walls of fame.
The space features a 350 seat dining room on the main floor and a bar with 16 seats. On a typical day, Tony’s serves over 1000 covers at both the Times Square and Upper East Side locations.
The original Tony’s Di Napoli was founded on the Upper East Side in 1990 as a passion project by partners Herb Wetanson, of Wetson's Hamburgers, and his son Greg Wetanson. It was loosely inspired by their family’s go-to Italian restaurant Don Peppe’s in Ozone Park, Queens. Today, a third generation, Stuart Wetanson, continues to steward the concept into the future.
Tony’s di Napoli doesn’t aim to reinvent Italian food. What it does do, however, is serve classic Italian-American cuisine that’s made with great ingredients and delicious.
“Our customer base is incredibly loyal and our managers have the memory of elephants,” said Stuart Wetanson, a co-owner. “Their ability to make someone they met a year ago feel special is incredible and genuine. People also find our food much more delicate and fresh than the more commercial red-sauce places, probably because we are so painfully old-fashioned about making everything to order.”
Signature appetizers include fried calamari, baked clams, and a colorful Chopped Chef Salad with sliced peppers, Finocchiona salami, shredded mozzarella, chickpeas and Castelvetrano Olives.
Then there’s the Caesar, prepared tableside by one of their charismatic servers including one who spontaneously belts out opera- yes, really (he

In the second iteration of my column where I transport you to Sicily through its food, I’m bringing you a winter staple from the executive chef, Emanuele Cipolla, at one of my favorite restaurants: Sofia, a farm to table Italian steakhouse complete with a sexy cigar bar and lounge in Englewood, New Jersey, just over the George Washington Bridge.

It’s that time of year again: the season for plotting out where to travel in the New Year. Staying closer to home is just as on-trend as venturing to faraway destinations for 2024. Here’s a taste of what these trending and wish-listed Airbnbs in the United States offer for 2024.
Where do you find spectacular and life-changing destinations that are without the hordes that have become commonplace in so many destinations worldwide, particularly in Europe? Last week in Forbes, I asked some travel experts about where people are going. This week, I asked the same gurus about their choices for where to go next. I was looking for off-the-radar destinations they love, places to go before they get discovered.

While the annual Times Square ball drop draws hordes of tourists each year, locals will be the first to tell you that the event can be a little overwhelming.
