Acclaimed Bahamian fashion designer Theodore Elyett has designed new looks that Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and other Disney characters will wear on Disney Cruise Line’s newest island destination, Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on the island of Eleuthera. He shared some of the special things about his journey as a designer and his collaboration with Disney Cruise Line, and it’s clear that Elyett has created his own fairy tale as a designer.
“I am from the island of New Providence where the capital city Nassau is located. While I was born in Nassau, some of my summers were spent on the island of Eleuthera as well; that’s where my family’s roots originate from. There’s absolutely a contrast between life in the ‘city,’ and life on any of our Family Islands. Life on our Family Islands tends to be a little more laid back, while life in the capital is a little more fast paced,” Elyett explained.
“No matter where you go between our islands, there is always a huge sense of community and a love for family. My childhood was filled with so much love from family and community; I shared a very close bond with both of my parents who passed away just days before Christmas in 2014 and 2015.”
Just as Disney is all about family, so is Elyett’s work. He revealed how much his family continues to influence what he does, stating, “My parents instilled in me from a very young age the values of hard work, discipline and understanding the importance of seasons; a time to work, a time to play. My parents both came from very humble beginnings and worked extremely hard to provide a life for my siblings and I which they were not privy to. I will always be grateful for the sacrifice and lessons learnt through their sacrifice which positioned me to be the man that I have become.”
“I grew up in a small community in New Providence; Seven Hills Estates in South Beach. I attended, and graduated from, Kingsway Academy and often found myself more drawn to Creative Arts studies. I spent many days after school at my mother’s factory; playing in the oversized boxes of scrap fabrics, learning the ins and outs of t-shirt printing, pattern drafting, and how to sew. My mother’s factory was the birthplace of my deep love for design,” he continued.
Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point is on the island of Eleuthera, and Elyett shared with me how it has a special place in his heart.
“Summers on Eleuthera at my grandfather’s property in Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera were spent running and playing on the beach with my sisters. Summers in Florida were spent at my grandmother’s house in Sarasota, Florida and at the end of any summer visit there, my sister Nestaea and I would host a fashion show, with scrap fabrics and clothes from my

The Indian Wells Open is my favorite U.S. tennis event, bar none. The Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa is a stone’s throw from the venue, and its beautiful desert grounds are a welcoming respite from the throngs trying to get a glimpse of Rafa (who will play on the evening of March 7th). Why is Indian Wells so special? There’s a paradoxical mellow and electric vibe there. A short drive from Palm Springs, California and set in the comparatively verdant Colorado Desert, it’s a place for meditation, introspection, self-care — and world-class tennis. The Indian Wells Open, AKA the BNP Paribas Open (BNP Paribas sponsors the event) is the most popular tennis event in the world aside from the four major slams, but the venue, Indian Wells Tennis Garden (owned by Larry Ellison since 2009), is so nicely designed that it never feels as crowded as it is. Food options are remarkably good (think Nobu sushi), and VIP and corporate boxes are close enough to the action (unlike at many venues) with excellent catering and service.

When my husband and I started toying with the idea of taking my teenagers on a whale-watching expedition cruise, we had no idea what to expect. While we’d cruised on several major cruise lines in the past, hopping on a 100-passenger ship run by National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions felt far different than anything we’d done before.
